Tell me this ancient doesn't remind you of a Buffalo nickel... sort of

I just found the resemblance amusing. image

(But maybe only because it's 4 AM and I've had too much caffeine and too little sleep.)

image Sadly, Fraser was one of the few that didn't plagiarize ... or who weren't excessively inspired by the work of their predecessors.

That's pretty darn cool! Might have to find a low grade example and have a hobo nickel carver from my coin club carve it into a hobo ancient image

Most numismatists won't debate this little nuance in coins, but we sure demand more history than that with some coins. Provenance man. Provenance. I need the provenance for it to be "special". LOL

And thank you for sharing. It's nice we can get it dated to within 110 years of when it was "coined" since "MINTING" probably wasn't a word used. But 115 is stretching it.

It does remind me of a Buffalo but who was the bloke? Was he a good or bad guy?

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

<< <i>It does remind me of a Buffalo but who was the bloke? Was he a good or bad guy? >>

The bloke is Herakles. Or Hercules, as we call him. Wearing a lion skin cloak, no doubt made from the skin of the Nemean lion he slew.

By all accounts he was a good guy.

You can click on the link in the OP for info. The coin is not mine- it is for sale by CNG.

One of y'all should buy it to complement a Buff set!

BTW, what appears to be PVC on there is not. It is a bluish patina, which is actually considered to be a positive attribute. CNG doesn't sell junk.
