I may be in the minority, but I think that for today's collector, the melting of coins in the past has helped the hobby not detracted from it. Nothing hurts a business more than over-supply. Now, I am not talking about melting the great rarities but the overly abundant coins which are now scarce to rare in the market and have as a result created a collector base who seek them.
