This actually just happened.

I haven't been able to save new searches for over a year. For some reason, today it got to me and I decided to call ebay customer service. It truly was an exercise in futility.

I was on the phone for over an hour in total, placed on hold 9 different times. They had me reset my password, try to log in with a different browser, try to log in through ebay.ca, none of it solved the issue. They kept trying to get me off the phone... "give it a week and see if it fixes." I told them it's been this way for over a year. Put on hold.

Then was told that the technical team had been notified. I asked if anyone would be getting back to me. They told me to wait for an announcement on the general ebay announcements page.

At this point, I asked, point blank, "so no one is going to get back to me?"

They said no.

I asked, "are you telling me that nothing will be done and you're just trying to get me off the phone?"

She said she didn't hear me, so I repeated the question.

"That's correct."

I paused, shocked that I had received a completely honest answer. Then I broke into laughter and thanked her for her honesty.

How is this company still in business?

This old workaround still does the trick.

At the end of a search, cut & paste the following at the end of the URL: &_jsoff=1

The new page will have a "Save search" link, which will let you not only save the search but give it a custom name - just like the old days.

A friend of mine had this very same problem as well.

Someone has to dethrone these guys, lord knows they're trying to do it themselves

I save my ebay searches in tab folders on my Google Chrome browser. I name them whatever I want and put them in any order I wish. It is actually more functional than ebay's old way and there's no limit. Problem solved.

I've had the exact same problem for around the last six months. Like you, I called ebay about it a few months ago and got the same response you did.

I've just gone to saving my searches in my internet favorites file. The biggest problem with that is that I don't get any emails when new items are posted, but at least I have them saved.

  • What IE version are you using? I'm using IE 9 and it works just fine. You could also try FireFox or Google Chrome.

I always marveled how some companies made money in spite of themselves.

I don't have that kind of luck. image

I think you can only save so many searches. Maybe a 100? Not sure.

You are correct. Thing is, I'm in the 70s on my saved searches.

I've also attempted to save my searches using my normal Google Chrome, as well as Firefox and Internet Explorer. None of them work. When I've contacted ebay, they simply don't give a sh!t image

Wasn't there someone a few years ago working on a sportscard online auction site? I vaguely remember they were a member here?

I just do my searches in Firefox then save as a bookmark. Whenever I search eBay I just open all my eBay bookmarks in tabs and browse the tabs. Not sure if that would be a good solution for you, Reg, but it's worth a shot.

I do the same, closing each tab as I'm done with the search. It's fast and efficient.
vcp's wantlist function turns up a lot of mislisted items as well.

They're still in business b/c your marginal impact on their bottom line is, for all practical purposes, zero. In fact, they could line up 10000 guys in the same position as you, and your combined impact on their bottom line would be essentially zero. Asking how Ebay can stay in business despite how poorly they treat you is like a starfish asking how the tides can still roll when the out-bound tide leaves it beached 12 hrs a day.

Ebay isn't so much a business as it is a force of nature. You seem like a smart guy; how has this fact eluded you?

I guess I'm lucky. My key searches are unusual enough that they have become the top suggested searches for each other.

Everyone beats the "I wish eBay had some true competition" horse as much as possible, but whenever given an alternative hobbyists stare at it like I imagine cavemen would a lava lamp. Twice I've attempted to sell on rival startup auction sites, including one geared specifically to the sports market and co-founded by a notable and well esteemed hobbyist and both times buyer traffic was next to nil. Both are now shutdown even though their interfaces were smooth and feedback positive. The only way eBay will ever get true market competition is if a major (think Wal Mart) corporation gets into the auction game and markets it massively at which point it would be just another major auction site run by a gigantic company that could really care less if your save search function was working.
