Can someon explain why Teletrade is no more.

RealoneRealone Posts: 18,519 ✭✭✭✭✭
Why couldn't Spectrum Group have kept both Stacks Bowers & Teletrade, it didn't matter to anyone I know that both were under the same ownership although I loved it when Teletrade was on its own....hey I am assuming that was the case, maybe I am wrong, but then that proves my point too..........Teletrade was a great auction site either way, period and now its gone just when we could use it. Why hasn't Spectrum got the message yet?

    Good question, Alan.

Teletrade finally got it right by dumping the mystery reserves.

The last 12 months or so I was a frequent buyer. Site was in my opinion the best to navigate in the business and customer service was exemplary.

    OK, I'll bite.

American business model these days. A reasonable profit isn't good enough. Now it's always more and more. Outsize growth is the name of the game. Please Wall Street and the execs will be set for several lifetimes.

I also enjoyed bidding in TeleTrade auctions, and acquired some really nice coins from them such as this one...

Could it have something to do with them losing Ian? Seems he keep the squeaky wheel rolling.

It would certainly be a welcome sight to once again see the Teletrade site. Lol.

They brought back Coke Classic. Anything is possible!

Spectrum is hardly a super mega company. They were taken private. Last sales report was maybe $100M or so and not profitable. They still have the Spain fraud hanging over their head and could be forced into bankruptcy at any time. That is the reason I would not do business with them.

Spain fraud case is still active? Kept me from submitting to TT, but was still a buyer.
  • Ooooo..Spain fraud thing sounds interesting, please elaborate or at least drop a link. Need some spice for my boring Friday afternoon.

How long after Ian left did they do away with it?
Wondering if that had something to do with things.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I used Teletrade periodically beginning in about 1990. I always thought they were a viable venue to sell certain coins and because of them I got involved in top-grade PCGS modern (post 1965) circulation strike singles.

I'd certainly welcome back TT if it was resurrected and conducted just as it always was.

Anyone know if the original founder Bernard Rome is still alive?

Maybe I am confused because I thought Teletrade was just renamed GreatCollections and with a lower fee.

Actually, following Ian's fine tenure as President, Teletrade brought on an equally competent, Brian Kendrella to become the next Teletrade President. He did quite well at that job and since then got promoted to President of Stacks Bowers. Thereafter, Corey Maita took over Teletrade and also did well and was thereafter promoted to COO of Stacks Bowers. There was never any shortage of talent over at Teletrade. Also, let's not forget Gar, Gil, Irma, Cheryl, etc. ... all great people (RIP Gar).

While Teletrade might never come back, I am confident that Brian, Corey, etc. will get Stacks' weekly sales on track to become a very successful weekly venue. The complaints about Teletrade back in the day (too high reserves, lower than desired sell through rates, etc) are the REALITY OF TODAY at other weekly auction venues. Simply, folks are not discussing it here like they did (at some point nearly only a daily basis) regarding Teletrade. But, I follow the US coin markets very closely and I am well aware of the TRUTH about weekly coin auctions and the major sales. I simply do not initiate threads about the situation out of respect for those sites owners and something my mother taught me long ago ("If you have nothing nice to say, then most of the time it is better to say nothing").

As always, just my two cents.

The Teletrade of 2007 was a welcome presence, with their 12% buyer fees, regularly rotating inventory, fast shipment, high credit card limits, excellent archives, and reasonable reserves.

The Teletrade of its last few years, with 17.5% buyer fees, stale inventory, slower shipping, and eye-roll starting prices was an annoyance, and its fate was predictable.

While I did not feel that the bidding in Teletrade was any different than any other site (damned snipers) I did appreciate the variety of offerings in the Moderns arena.

It seems that, anymore, Auction Houses simply do not want to list anything that might sell for $10 or $15 bucks. It's all gotta be in the hundreds of dollars.

Folks simply don't understand that the stuff that Teletrade was selling simply could not be found at a coin show or most BM Shops. My participation in Teletrade enabled me to look at and buy a lot of stuff but, those days are long gone. And for that, I need to thank the "Greed Machine" and whatever name it chooses to call itself.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Speaking of sites with small issues, I can not see a post on this thread since Cupronik's post earlier this morning. How do I fix that on my iPad?

    Spain fraud?

Afinsa was the world's third largest collectibles company, after Sotheby's and Christie's.

I liked TT. The most that should have been done is change the name. Instead they appear to have scrapped the whole thing.

I purchased this from TT 11/6/2011 for around $990, currently $1800 in PCGS price guide. 1959 Jefferson PR68DCAM 16/1
