Imagine if there were more than 18 hard core cocanie addicts in a room with a very limited amount of cocaine and the worlds only manufacturer put an indefinite halt on production. I think $426 is light for this registry eligible holder.

Looks like the kind of pack PSA loves....gum stuck firmly to the front card. Can't have any of that loose gum that occurs in beautiful, well-preserved fresh packs!
<< <i>I would guess pack registry competitors, pop 18 none higher.
Edit: Were you questioning the price or how it got a 9? >>
The price. Even considering the registry this is still WAY off from other packs sold before and after. I thought it might be a case of dueling bananas snipes but that wasn't the case.
Wasn't there an 81T BB wax pack that went for insane money a couple months ago as well? Pack prices seem to be all over the place, recent 81 packs in PSA8 typically sell in the $40-45 range, but there were a couple sales at $100 & $130.
It could just be two people with nuclear bids gone awry.
<< <i>Imagine if there were more than 18 hard core cocanie addicts in a room with a very limited amount of cocaine... >>
Too true. I would only add that the cocaine in question has been stepped on a ton and is only about 2% pure. But addicts and will go for it anyway. As Patrick Bateman once said, "If we do enough of it, I think we'll be alright."

I think it was even more that that. It was very shortly after PSA stopped grading mint packs with appropriately loose gum.

Simply put, the power of the low pop and the set registry. 1976 wax is a very tough pack to find in PSA 9, too. If a 1978 PSA 9 pack ever surfaces, it will probably even eclipse this price. The 1976 wrapper variation is actually even tougher to find in PSA 9 grade, at least.
It does seem bizarre, but then again, paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a low pop PSA 9 or 10 1970s common card seems bizarre to many, too. To each their own.

Okay, if there's a wrapper variation then I suppose it can make sense. But this went for more than double what all previous 76 PSA 9 packs sold for. Like LC mentioned earlier, there were some other real oddball outliers in the last few months as well, with some packs selling for 2x-3x what anything previously sold for, and then dipping back down to norm after that.

A PSA 8 1975 regular sized wax pack sold for $460+ a while back, also. Certain issues/years are very tough to find in Mint 9 or even NM-MT 8 grade. The wrapper variation on this pack really didn't have much if any effect on the price. It's the grade and the year. PSA 9 1976 Topps baseball wax packs are very tough to find. If a PSA 9 1978 pack ever surfaces, it'll be at least a $400 pack.
Mark is also spot in. A PSA 9 1976 wax pack hadn't come up for sale in a long while (and hasn't since) so pent up demand was also a key factor.

So what happens when the new holder comes out? Do prices take a dip when people start sending them in? Oh, now I feel bad about breaking my 76 packs on a whim.
The bottom line: this stuff is just getting harder and harder to find with each passing day. Just ask steve at bbce; it wasnt that long ago that his website was littered with a plethora of vintage unopened, literally pages upon pages of just 60's packs alone!! Not so much anymore!!!!
And speaking of the 76 psa 9 pack, was wondering if anyone saw what this 68 pack sold for a little over a month ago:
(Sorry, I'm still illiterate when it comes to pasting live links!!)
This had to be a record for a 68 psa 9 pack. And that pack makes this auction I won a couple months ago look like a steal and a half!!!! (At least according to tim it was!!!!)

There's more 70s stuff on Steve site than in the past few years. I'm not saying there's a plethora (it's a SWEATER!) of this stuff out there but I seriously doubt basic supply had anything to do with this. Graded supply? Maybe a different story. But this is definitely new registry activity as I hadn't seen this type of price disparity before.
<< <i>If a 1978 PSA 9 pack ever surfaces, it will probably even eclipse this price. >>
Steve had one, sold for $95. Still listed on his site. Hope you got it, Tim. >>
Thanks, Arthur, but I missed it while at work~bizarrely enough, the pop report on PSA 9 1978 wax packs went from none to nine virtually overenight, so I hope to pick one up at some point. As nice as nine 9s was for the submitter, the value of one or even two would have been a lot more lucrative had the pop report not exploded like that. It's better for collectors, though, as the insane amounts bid up for some of these lower pop packs are more about label collecting and less about pack collecting, imho...
