Whale mailday from BBCE! Guess what it is. (late night update 10/8 11pm Pacific with scan)

After the drama of my previous post I am happy to be posting a much more positive thread. I have been in search of this item for a while and I found out Steve had this item (to my knowledge it was not listed on the BBCE website). After an exchange of emails we worked out a deal for it. It arrived yesterday (on my day off) and it was a pleasant surprise for me this morning. Before I post pics tonight when I get home I wanted to see if anyone could guess this item. So let's hear some guesses. I will post pics late tonight so everyone knows what it is. Hope to have some much needed fun with this thread (after the eBay drama) image.

Nothing like fun times at the old mailbox image.

Total guess, sealed box of 1981 Topps Football wax packs.

(edit to add the "wax packs" clarification on my guess)

    Mail day is always fun.

Since I usually forgot what I bought, it's like Christmas when I open the package.

Have no idea - I'm guessing 78 or 79T wax or cello?

    Looking forward.

    It this a give-a-way contest?

I hope this isn't a RakPak case of 1978 Battlestar Galactica. I've been asking him for one of these for years.

A 1952 topps baseball "high numbers" case. Directly from the Atlantic Ocean where Sy Berger dumped it.

Sorry guys. I am on the west coast and I have been working all day pretty much non-stop, since my original post. I won't get pictures up until I get home. Some pretty funny posts and some other real good guesses. Some of you are giving me a little more credit for disposable income than I deserveimage

As a clue, the item is valued around $2500-3000 and John (JMaciu) has been the closest. Think outside the boximage

  • That better early 80's then. The 'think outside the box' thing, if ANYONE uses that term nowadays that has a job, should, well, be yourself I guess.

Alright, I got home and the kid is in bed, so I am free to post. Man, there was some nice stuff people were throwing out as ideas for this item. I am going to have to save up to try and get some of the stuff people were posting. Now, my item seems a little ordinary. Nevertheless, this is my favorite card. That's right, my latest BBCE purchase is not an unopened product, it is actually one of the many graded cards they have for sale. I don't think they put them on the site, but they run a lot of BIN's for graded cards on eBay. I saw this one listed and emailed Steve and we were able to make an off eBay deal for it.

Some of you have read my posts describing how I got my self-submitted BGS 9. I have been after a PSA 9 for a while now to match the BGS 9. Someday, I will get this in a PSA 10. For now, I am happy with this 9 to hold the place in my collection until a suitable 10 can be found (and subsidized). One of a few cards that can be introduced only by number, #57 from 1986 Fleer Basketball (IMO the modern 52 Mantle):

Congratulations slum! That is one of the most iconic cards in the hobby. I remember being just as excited when I got mine. And if there's a sure fire investment in this hobby, it's that card.

Steve, that is an awesome Jordan. Congrats on picking up a great copy of your favorite card.
  • Congrats on getting this card. That someone mentioned, that is a great investment piece. I too shall own that card one day in a 9.

Thanks for the nice words everyone. I have been trying to get a nicely centered one for a while now in PSA 9 but they are surprisingly hard to find centered even in 9's. While this one isn't perfect T/B or L/R, I found it to be better than most and I didn't feel like waiting anymore. Knowing I could trust the seller helped too. I hope to someday own this card in a 10, but that would require selling off a lot of my collection to justify/subsidize spending that much on one card. I'm not quite ready for that now, but I figured holding this card will allow me to hedge if the card continues its present rise in price in both grades. In my earlier post, I said I think this card is the modern 52 Mantle and I really think that is the case. Jordan has the same type of following and fan base that Mantle enjoyed decades earlier. IMO this card is the iconic card of the 80's to present and you can make the argument for it being the most iconic card in the hobby since the 52 Mantle. In any case, I couldn't be happier to add it to my collection. Thanks again for enjoying the card with me!
