This Dime is Not a 1942-S Inverted MM (wrong type MM). At Fun Auction, Now. Link Fixed.

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
Edited December 24, 2014. The coin is now going to be auctioned at Fun. I dropped Heritage an email, so it should be interesting to see if they pull the coin. If any of you have clout with Heritage, it would be appriated if you would let them know about the error on this holder.

Here is the link.

For all the Mercury Dime variety fans out there. Please note the mint mark in wrong on this coin (san serif). I don't know where to go to get this thing pulled by either ebay or PCGS. The coin is simply a 1942 type 2 mintmark. You can also check page 70 in the Cherrypickers' Guide 5th ed volume II.

Here is a link to the coin http://www.ebay.com/itm/1942-S-10c-Mercury-Dime-PCGS-MS65FB-FS-501-Inverted-S-Mintmark-FINEST-KNOWN-/390920235481?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5b04a969d9#ht_43wt_662

Here is an image of how the mintmark should look. You can clearly see the mintmark has serifs.

I sure wish PCGS would contact the seller and get this thing pulled off the market.

  • Hi,

I was made aware of this thread today. I am the seller of the coin in question. It was a consignment to us from a good customer. Not familiar with the variety I listed it as certified in line with my customers wishes. I have since ended the listing and will be speaking to my customer about this coin. I'm sure he will be contacting PCGS. I'll keep everyone posted as to the outcome. Thanks again to you for the post and Lee for pointing it out to me.

Thanks, Matt! I wish it were the right coin. It is a very difficult variety.

nice to hear of/from a responsible dealer/seller! Too many negative stories out there. Stories about conscientious sellers should be more prominent.

Good job all around. It is definitely not the inverted "S" variety for the reason stated by Fcloud.

    I agree.

After viewing the listing and making the requisite CPG comparison's, I immediately recognized the dealer who happens to be active on Coin Talk. A simple PM to him brought immediate results.

Lot's of times, prominent sellers on eBay take in consignments. This happened to be one of them.

A hearty "Here! Here!" to Matt!

Which is each of our responsibilities as numismatists. Point out the obvious without criminalization.

ALL TPG's make mistakes and this simple reality should be understood by even the most basic collector. It gives us the necessary background for "learning" and continuing our pursuits.

What am I missing here? The label says 1942-S MS67FB. No mention of an inverted "S: Mintmark. Has the label been corrected?

The photo shown is the inverted MM , is that correct?
that's what it appears to me. Sometimes inverted MM's are hard to tell.

any visual rules on determining these? Small loop on top larger on bottom
for correct orientation, inverted oriention if reversed?

This photo is of the correct variety. The coin in the auction is a different mint mark type, and not the inverted MM. A quick check with a Cherrypickers' Guide will show the coin in the auction is not the inverted S.

Heritage needs to pull that thing. Stinks that problem made it into the attributed holder. With millions of coins graded, there will be mistakes though. I have had the exact opposite happen multiple times where a coin has been sent in as the correct variety, they say it isn't and the. I have to send it back with a very looooong note to state my case for it to be done right. It's all part of the fun though.

Maybe PM Stewart that is on here from Heritage or change the title to attention Heritage to get attention or PM Mark Feld ATS...or email him or email the other thousands of employees.... Hopefully it gets pulled soon. I'll PM/email folks tomorrow if it is still there.

I sent a PM to Stewart Huckaby here on the forum and then emailed both Stewart Huckaby and Mark Feld at Heritage. I'll update this thread when I hear back from someone. Hopefully the auction item is pulled and sent back to PCGS for correction SOON. Fingers are crossed. image

If I do not hear back in a couple of days I will follow up by calling Heritage.

I heard back from Mark Feld. He contacted a cataloguer about the problem and hopes the issue will be addressed on Monday but will stay on top of it. Wooohooooo!

Great news. Now I hope it gets fixed, and doesn't show up at another action house. It has now been pulled from Ebay, and Heritage. Where next???
