How rare is a 1970 Topps baseball cello display box?

I'm not talking about the little box that housed each individual pack. I'm talking the box that housed the 24 or whatever packs. The box shows Tom Seaver in a pitching pose (the photo used on the 1970 Super card). My first collecting memory is buying 1970 packs at the corner store in Brooklyn. I remember really wanting that Seaver card and being surprised when the actual card was a portrait shot. Would love to have that display box one day!

I'm looking for one too. Never put the connection together with the Seaver super card from that year, thanks for pointing that out.

You would think Fritsch with his never ending supply of 1970 cellos would have sold a few of them but none have popped up yet.

That particular Box very rarely shows up.

The Seaver image on the box is really nice, the regular issue card ...... ummmm not so much, or at least compared to the one high lighted.
Always thought it strange that Topps would use an image of a card on their display box that was not available in the box they were promoting.

But that was not a first for them with this practice as they did the same thing on the 1963 Topps Football Box featuring Y.A. Tittle and Most likely
    there are other examples also.

Never noticed the fake Seaver card before!

The '70-72 cello boxes are really cool compared to the boring boxes used later in the '70s....wonder why the '72 box features generic cards instead of the real design?

My guess on the generic cards is they hadn't finalize the design yet and for 1972 they planned on issuing cellos much earlier than in 1970 and 71

Very tough to find. Both cello and rack display boxes are very rare especially in comparison to wax display boxes. All cello and rack display boxes from 1970-1973, essentially, are very difficult to find.

John - I thought the same thing and actually sent Fritsch an email inquiry last week. Not reply yet.

I called Fritsch and spoke with someone and he said that they did not have any of the 1970 display boxes (nor did they save the inner green cello boxes apparently).

Mr. Mint once had a cello case way, way back in the day (when he was just plain Alan Rosen) and I bought one. Still have the box and a couple of packs but the box has some wear. That is the only case I have ever seen although it's certainly possible another came to auction and I missed it. Love those cello packs with the outer box. So much fun to go through them at the big drug stores that used to carry a lot of cards in the early 70s and look for favorite players. Trouble was, I usually found 4 or 5 and only had enough $ for one cello and maybe one wax pack!

Sorry..didn't mean to imply I'd bought the entire case from Rosen--just one box. I think I was about 21 at the time.

I have the portion of the box with Seaver in a frame. The frame has been moved around a bit so not mint. Contact me if interested.

Those are really nice looking boxes. Too bad they went to green and then relatively generic red white and blue.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.
