Does red cedar cause coins to tone?

I recently bought a small collection of coins and there were some original rolls of Jefferson nickels that were placed in one of those scale replicas of a cedar chest.
Its like a 1/10 scale version of a lane cedar chest and there were 30 rolls of nickles in it.
About half are NF string rolls and the rest are the type that come from the Mint with the colorful wrappers. The oldest are 2004 and the newest are 2011.
Many are developing significant endroll toning , even the 2011 dates. I think they were all placed in the box at one time after 2011 and basically untouched.

You can definitely smell it. I don't believe they were placed in there to tone , the chest just happens to hold nickel rolls perfectly. Nickels wouldn't normally tone in 3 years just from paper rolls I'm thinking.

<< <i>Does cedar emit sulfur? >>
Not sure, but Sulfur is not the only chemical that can lead to color.

It would be tough I'd have to dig one out of a roll end without screwing up a roll. I'm more of a coin scanner than picture taker
