Mold on gum in packs

I recently purchased some boxes noted as having water damage. Almost all of the cards, surprisingly, look great...however the boxes are shot.

But I see some pieces of gum with mold on them. I haven't seen mold on gum before so I'm wondering if this is normal for the age or maybe it could have something to do with the water?

Never seen it before. Must be the water. Mold on the cards?

Mold on gum is not normal, at least going back to the mid-1960s (I don't have any examples earlier than this). It is a result of water/excess humidity.

The packs must have been stored in a damp environment over the years.

That kind of gum is similar to a frog's underside. If you lick it, Jimi Hendrix's 'Are You Experienced' kicks in. I'd lick that gum before tossing it.
