Collectibles insurance

I am wondering if there is a particular insurance company that is reputable for insuring collectibles. Does anyone here use a service like this for their collection? Any recommendations? A specific question I have with collectibles insurance is shipping items. If I have this insurance does this mean I will be protected if I ship my collectible (whether for selling or authentication purposes) without buying postal insurance. Thanks for any help.

There are several. I spent a lot of time looking at the primary companies (all of whome use outside insurance companies to actually underwrite the policy) and went with Antiques & Collectibles National Association. They offered the best price and came recommended from some people with higher-end collections and businesses. My policy is underwritten by Lloyds of London. I also checked out Collect Insure and Finkelmeirer.

You are insured when shipping, but you might also consider the potential impact of a claim on your insurance rates. For expensive items, I strongly prefer using FedEx - no insurance.

For anyone interested, here is some contact info. I don't have any affiliation with this company or get any type of referral compensation.

I use Collect Insure and have for 6 years. Prices are reasonable for what I insure--runs about $1,500/year--of course I have not had to file a claim with them--which is the true test of an insurance company

    hopefully I never have to!!
  • does anybody here live on the coast? reason, I ask is that I have checked into coll ins a few times and every company wants to insure me, however w/ a flood clause. 1st time was pretty intense in what I had to do to just get a quote and flood is my primary reason behind getting insurance, as I have theft and fire pretty much covered....

Collect Insure is widely used by stamp, coin, and card collectors & dealers. If you have to submit a claim for a shipping issue it is much more efficient than dealing with USPS. The cost of the policy will vary with your needs. If you search the different boards you will find many positive endorsements. http://www.collectinsure.com/GetEstimate.aspx

I am about two miles from the Pacific and don't have a flood clause. I would expect that flood clauses are a much bigger issue on the Atlantic and Gulf sides.

You only have to schedule items valued at $2,500 or more, and provide a basic photo (e.g., I just used my iPhone).

For my quote, Collect Insure was about 50% higher than ACNA. I'd recommend shopping around, as I imagine there can be significant variation based on where you live, etc.

yep, I'm on the Georgia coast, slab-dab in the middle of hurricane alley. and while (knock on wood) we've never been directly hit, I still pay insurance premiums as if we have....

like I said, got fire and theft pretty much knocked out. it's the flood that's my primary concern!

I use Collectibles Insurance for the last couple of years. I haven't had any issues, but haven't had any reason to contact them after my initial policy was set up. You are indeed covered for shipping and transport. However, there are some stipulations on sending an item by a certain mail service depending on the value. That was spelled out in the policy. If I had it with me, I could look it up for you. It wasn't a big deal to me, but you simply can't send something regular USPS mail and expect to be able to file your claim with them. It was either Registered, or Express or something like that
  • There are tiers of coverage limit based on type of mail. Up to $200 for regular, no sign confirmation mail. $2500 for sign confirmation. More for Registered.
