What does ANYONE OR EVERYONE think of these RC from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s

All,

I posted a few photos from my card collection of Pre-1980 cards yesterday that I was hoping to get some feedback and estimated grades, as the cards are raw and ungraded. Unfortunately, I don't think I posted it in the right place.

As the youngest child of four by many years, I was able to spend lots of time with my father and we began collecting baseball cards - specifically those from his generation. I loved it, and did not expect to have now what I have - a large beautiful and incredible collection. However, our hobby predated PSA, so I will be sending many of my finest cards off to PSA to be graded before auctioning them off or selling them privately.

I have attached images of 8 cards:

1954 Bowman Mantle
1954 Topps Kaline - RC
1954 Topps Aaron - RC
1955 Topps Killebrew - RC
1959 Topps Gibson - RC
1965 Topps Carlton - RC
1969 Topps Jackson - RC
1975 Topps Brett - RC

If you are inclined, please take a brief moment and let me know what I have in terms of grades and possibly monetary value.

TAKE THEM OUT OF THOSE HEAVY SCREW DOWN HOLDERS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edited to add: Very hard to tell the condition based upon those pictures. Do you have a scanner? That Mantle looks AMAZING, but hard to really tell from that picture. If it grades a "7" that's $1,500.00 .... an
    "8.5" is over Ten Grand!

Those will grade extremely well, and being graded and encapsulated will drastically improve the money you get for them You will also find a lot of interested buyers in this forum, as well. Do you know how to submit them? Let me know if you have any questions about it and I can help you through the process of getting them graded.

  • I want to get them out of the thick one inch screw down holders - however, I am scared to death. They have been that way for 20+ years.
  • I have been talking with several auction houses, who are willing to take them over to PSA for me. Is that the best course of action?

I can't see this being a bad thing as long as they are transparent on any costs associated with grading them.

There are some reputable auction houses that do good business on high grade vintage cards like this. Have they quoted you what their percentages will be on the sales?

  • We have discussed their commission rate. Been quote their normal 15%, however, based on the grading of the cards, obviously they will fetch higher prices, they expressed with higher value cards the commission rate is negotiable.

They will deduct the price of PSA's grading from the final sale price.

What is really holding me up is having to send them across country (FEDex and Insurance?). I may fly them myself and then catch the red-eye back.

With cards like that you should not have to pay ANY commission to the AH. Depending on the grades, you might even be able to get a piece of the Buyer's Premium from the AH.

  • Doug,

Can you please expand on this notion?

Very nice cards from the look of it. I would anticipate 0-5% from most AHs (you won't get the buyer premium, which is usually 15-20%). I believe that both REA and Heritage are up against come consignment deadlines. Mile High and Memory Lane are also seeking consignments. I would be comfortable sending FedEx no insurance. Many believe that insuring with FedEx makes the package a target. Good luck!

    WOW! Beautiful cards!

BE VERY CAREFUL taking the cards out that don't have "penny" sleeves protecting them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a card in a screw down that looked like a "10" and when I removed it a tiny piece of the corner stuck to the holder.

I have heard that putting the card with holder in the freezer overnight before taking them out of the holder might help if this is a problem.

Good luck and I hope your cards are fine.

If they come out fine. Send them to PSA and sell them on ebay yourself. Set a reasonable reserve and you shouldn't have any problems and you will not have to pay someone to sell them for you.

  • What should I be hoping for (as I have heard that it all depends on the day and the grader) in regards to PSA grading?
  • Submit these cards to PSA yourself. I wouldn't trust anyone else submitting them for me. Unfortunately, the fact that the cards were in those brick-like screw-down holders for so many years likely contributed to the smashing of their corners, which unfortunately will result in cards that otherwise would have earned an 8 or 9 getting downgraded into a 5 or 6. It's a shame you kept them in those holders for so long. Many years ago when I purchased some cards that came in such holders, I immediately removed the cards and am sure glad I did!
  • I removed the cards from the holders and there were no issues.

I am a bit upset with myself that I have kept them in those holders for so long. Most came out of famous finds and collections and they came to us in those holders. We didn't know any better and PSA was years away.

The corners are perfect, but some of the cards you can tell that they were in those holders. I didn't think that would take away from the card. Would I be better off selling them privately in the holders versus sending them to PSA and having them grade 3 or 4 numbers lower than what they are.

Any other suggestions so they don't show like they have been in those holders?
  • Nice stuff!

Post larger images of front and back of each.

Take multiple photos and use lighting and glare to show any surface issues or indentations from the holders. Better information is required to give you accurate advise.
  • There are NO indentations from the holders, but when holding the cards between the thumb and index finger and looking at them from a side view you can see a gradual difference in card thickness from the middle out.

Mantle is a little off centered on the reverse side. All the others are as centered or better than the fronts.

I think I will hand deliver them to PSA myself. Fly out early morning and then return on the Red eye.
  • You should get them graded. I know nothing about baseball, so other guys can give you a ballpark of value to determine service level (ballpark is fine; PSA won't cap your grade based on service level). If they grade super high, you might get charged more, but you should be happy about that. You'll get the best return if they're PSA graded, even if they come back low.

EDIT: I would recommend that you mail them instead of personally fly it out. Registered mail = uber safe.
  • Thanks Casey.

This has been so informative and needed. I am glad that I was able to get on the forum and that you and the others have been so open to helping.
  • Thanks. FedEx or USPS?
  • USPS. Registered Mail.
  • Thanks.
  • If you are on/near the East Coast and want to hand them off to PSA in person, PSA will be at the big Philadelphia card show (Philly Show) in 2 weeks. They will be accepting drop off submissions at the show. If you bring a screwdriver they may even help you transfer them from the current holder and place them in the proper holders so they are "PSA ready".
All your money won't another minute buy.
  • That is a possibility.

Would they grade them there or send them to Cali and then back to me?
  • I do not believe that they are grading on site in Philadelphia. They would take them to Ca. and then mail them back to you when finished.

I would definitely have the cards graded by PSA. If you decide to ship them, I would use the USPS. Good luck. Please keep us posted.
