PCGS Tour Morgan Dollar

I don't know much about this display except that it was at a Seattle ANA and I think a few other sites. It was a set of Morgans that were out of some of the best collections of the time, Jack Lee, Casper, NFL set and others. After the tour ended, the coins went back to the owners. I cant imagine many of the label are around, or even the pedigree as that would be given up for some great names. I have been told there were a lot ofPL/DMPL coins in the display.

I picked up this Tour coin at Long Beach, I think it is a pretty cool piece.

If you have any info or memories of the display feel free to share.

Hall of Fame pedigree. That's one to keep forever. image

Ask David Hall; there should be an article about the Tour Set somewhere in the PCGS archives.
    When in doubt, don't.

I saw the "TOUR SET" at the Chicago ANA , 1991. It drew large crowds.
By comparison the "Saddle Ridge Hoard" display was a none event. Lots
of nice dollars such as the one posted here.

The PCGS tour of silver dollars, which took place in 1990 and 1991 and which featured some of the finest certified coins, borrowed from various collections, had an 1887/6-O in just MS-64 grade, one of the very few coins in the exhibit in less than MS-65 preservation.

A great pedigree coin with a nice cameo contrast. I wasn't aware that the ANA had the PCGS Tour Set up here in Seattle back in 90-91 or at any other time. Come to think of it, I am not sure if the ANA has ever had a convention up here in Seattle, only in Portland.

Your close up pictures really show the coin in great detail, nice pick image

    Brian:

The ANA had a show up in Seattle at the end of summer in 1989. I was there and saw this collection (or so says a friend of mine who was there with me!). I paid for the trip by selling a Proof Lincoln penny where my net profit was equal to the amount of money I had in the coin - maybe it was a 1931?

Todd: nice coin! Who does your photography? Can I get his/her card? image

Great Morgan. I vividly remember the Morgan dollar set at the Seattle ANA show...89, 90? I really wasn't into dollars then (or now) but the set was beautiful! I remember it well.

Since our host is the one that put this together,
maybe they can give us the background on this
event. There may even have been a handout.
The 1884-S and the 1886-O were two of my
    favorites.
  • DennisHDennisH Posts: 13,963 ✭✭✭✭✭
From a Heritage Auctions listing description in the August 2004 Pittsburgh sale:

The PCGS Tour was an assemblage of the finest Morgan silver dollars from top collections and brought together as a traveling display, representing perhaps the finest possible Morgan dollar set. Although the property of several different owners, these were all labeled as PCGS Tour coins, and today are seldom encountered.

    When in doubt, don't.

That is a very cool coin. Wonder how many of these are still in the "PCGS Tour" holder (guessing it is a small number)

I happen to have a few of the brochures that PCGS
printed (8.5 x 7 inches, color, glossy paper) in
    1990.

The cover says "A Rare Coin Experience"

"The World's Finest Morgan Silver Dollars"

Inside two pages show four coins, with info on types of
    Dollars, Grading, etc.

The back cover says "With generous loans from the Private
    Collections of:

and then lists 14 names of those who loaned coins for the exhibit.

There's also a label on the back that says "Premier Exhibition"

    99th Annual
    ANA Convention
    Seattle, Washington
    August 22-26, 1990

I happen to have some of the brochures because I lent PCGS
my (at the time, mine) 1880-S Morgan, PCGS MS-69 - the
first Morgan Dollar of any date, graded PCGS MS-69, at the time.

By the way, none of the coins pictured had "PCGS Tour" on their
tags....must have been added after the brochure was printed.

I'll be glad to mail a brochure out to the first half-dozen or so
CU members who email me requesting it........

( am I allowed to put my email here for this purpose, or not? )

Hope this info helps a bit.......
