What would you do if the bottom of the unopened market fell out?

If you woke up tomorrow and the market value of all your unopened vintage was equal to the sticker prices that were originally on those packs, would you still keep them sealed or would you rip away?

As much as I like the looks of the unopened vintage and the mystery of what could lay inside, I would have wrappers flying faster than food that hits the ground where my dog is salivating.

I always tell myself that is one big redeeming quality of buying all the vintage unopened.

I'm going to assume that the prices of the underlying cards experience a similar fate, or else it would be a no-brainer to open 1970s through early 1980s. I would not rip the unopened product I have that is extremely difficult to find, but would open the easier ones (e.g., 1978-1983). I would then purchase more unopened to replace those boxes.

This is not an answer to your question but I think supply and demand would prevent the scenario you present. Assuming no armageddon of course.
If I had some vintage unopened i would rip them but heck I'd rip them tonight if I had them.

+1, and I'd be starting a lot of rip threads.

Assuming the price of cards remained relatively flat (if the underlying value of cards drop then unopened will be the least of my worries).

If unopened drops 10% (a 1975 Topps Mini Box starts selling for $2,700 instead of $3,000): I would do nothing (actually, I probably wouldn't even notice).

If unopened drops 25% (the same 1975 Topps Mini Box starts selling for $2,250 again): I would buy

If unopened drops 50% (the same 1975 Topps Mini Box starts selling for $1,500 again): I would buy like crazy

If unopened drops 75% and stays there (the same 1975 Topps Mini Box starts selling for $750): I would rip. I have opened 3 1975 Topps Mini Boxes in my life and have documented the results of about a dozen more. I have found that the "value" of the cards inside can range anywhere from $500 (if the centering is just HORRIBLE) to $3,000 with most of the boxes around $2,000-2,250. That alone will keep the value of the boxes relatively high.

    The beauty of unopened:

The less unopened available, the more the underlying cards a worth. The more the cards are worth, the more unopened that is ripped. The more unopened that is ripped, the less unopened available.....

If prices reverted to the original sticker price I would sell my 88 and 89 Topps rack cases for a tidy profit and plow it into some older issues.

I would continue to buy and enjoy. Ripping the occasional old pack brings back memories as fond as morning wood!

  • Reseal the bottom? I am in the minority in that I wouldn't even know except to see a lot more threads on here about buys and rips

I didn't put together my modest unopened run as an investment or even "wealth storage vehicle".

So, if prices plummeted, my collection would remain in tact, however:

    1. I would take advantage of the lower prices to extend, as supply allowed, my current collection back further than 1976.

    2. I would buy additional boxes of my favorite releases specifically to rip and build killer NRMT+ raw sets.

Original value? I'd open a box a day, buy only after I had 2 boxes of every series of topps, donruss and fleer 1989 and below, sport and non sport, safely stashed unopened. Also after I had 1 loose pack of each of those sets. Then....rip city. I'm pretty sure that's why there isn't enough of these stuff to go around.

Silly question with absolutely no chance of it happening.

Please ask me something that could actually happen and I will give a thoughtful reply.

    How about;

"If you woke up tomorrow and the market value of all your unopened vintage dropped by 50%, would you still keep them sealed or would you rip away?"

It would be very unusual for this to happen, but much better chance of this than the sticker prices that were originally on those packs.

Or how about; what would I do if I came home to find Salma Hayak in a negligee lying on my bed!!!!!! I would definitely rip away!!!!!
