I went back and found a Rick Snow thread on these special gold coins form The California Gold Rush.

Per Rick: Augustus humbert's collection of Private California gold is the most fabulous collection of the gold rush period.

Same winning bidder and underbidder... Tangible Investments is well known and not for cheap prices... very curious as to what the members here make of this auction.

Bidder #3 is also interesting. If either the winner or underbidder dropped out there would have been a significantly lower price.

    1851: $66,101.00
    1852: $75,122.00

I tried to bid a good bit (10's of thousands) more than they sold for, but ebay gave me an error message that stated "
    Alert

To help protect your eBay account, we sometimes limit the amount of items that can be bid on or purchased by a single account. However, you may be able to increase the limit on your account by verifying some information about yourself."

I'm pretty irked by this as I spend over a million dollars a year on ebay. Grrrrr. Perhaps they went so cheap because other people encountered the same issue?

I am ID verified and have a card on file at ebay btw.

I've run into similar issues with the bay. Unfortunately, for things I still think about, but they do keep things interesting.

Sounds like a house buy in to me. Years ago dealers asked me to place eBay bids that they said I would not have to honor to protect their offerings. I refused to do it.

The last time I priced slugs in grades like this at a show. The dealer treated me with contempt as if I could not afford it. Little did they know ..., but hey they can run their business the way they please.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the prices on these once the latest finds of the SS Central America are dispersed. They are pulling up quite a few territorial gold pieces!

Gee, maybe there is hope of me yet. image

Although everyone predicted that the prices for 1857-S double eagles recovered from the SS Central America would come down, but they didn't. The increased supply and publicity increased demand so that that the prices have remained high.
