Latest Crack To Bump Dieselness

So this one I think is even cooler than the Molitor RC to PSA 10 from PSA 9. I saw this card in a 7 holder one day cruising eBay, and it just screamed out that it was way better than the grade. I scrutinized it and blew up the scan, and just thought it was beautiful.
The BIN for this PSA 7 was a staggering $44.50. The VCP average was barely $15. The record high at the time for a PSA 7 was only $23. Some might have thought I was a fool to pay so much for a 7, essentially shattering the sacred pricing history. But I knew what I saw, and was happy to have what looked to me to be a 9 even if it said 7, and the price was way cheaper than what a 9 would cost me.
In hand it was just as strong. Had one slightly weak corner in top left, but the others were solid 9 corners and it had less PD than most 9s I've seen, and way better centering than many. Then one day a buddy was driving a bunch of stuff down to PSA and was like, "You really should crack and resubmit that 76 Ryan." I rolled with him and gambled for fun. And now BAM.
Goes to show we gotta trust our eyes. It also really cemented for me that if I take VCP too seriously and am unwilling to pony up a premium for a standout in the grade, I can miss out on really nice cards. The 9 scan is on a white background currently but will correct that soon.

it is a crack / resub
right?
congrats on the grade.. I have quite a few 8's and 9's that should be in 9-10 holders
a few I am trying to have reviewed right now.

No way that card bumps, though, from a 7 to a 9, unless it's cracked and resubbed raw.

<< <i>100% agree, Grote-- had to be a crack-out all the way. >>

While it is great for you to get the bump and get a nice score , that corner does not look like 9 quality.
I agree that the card looked like an undergraded 7 but now it looks like an overgraded 9. hopefully it is just your scanner that is making it look worse than it is. how does that corner look on the back

I am not. What is the alternative? Back to old school where one person sells a raw "mint" card and the buyer receives said "mint" card in "excellent" condition?
There will always be a subjective nature to the business. Possibly if the same graders saw that very card again they may both give it an 8. At least they can narrow down a card's true condition relative to their grading scale. And lastly, the "buy the card not the holder" comes into play. That card probably sold for much better than typical 7's and may not sell quite as high as typical 9's do.
For the most part I think the graders do an admirable job.

If you use the logic of buying the card and not the holder in this instance, isn't it still a $44 card? The only thing that has changed IS the holder.

Was just able to do a better scan now with a black background.

<< <i>Continues to reinforce that you are better off cracking and resubbing 95% of the time. The only time I won't is when the slabbed card is just too expensive to risk. >>
There are other times when cracking doesn't pay. I had a '61 Yaz PSA 5 card (not very expensive) that I cracked and resubbed and got a "min size req" on. Guess it shrunk in the holder.
