Did I Get Shilled? Scan Added

Was wondering if any board experts know how to detect shill auctions. Thanks, Pat

Shilled?

The 0-feedback bidder's activity may be questionable, but the actual under bidder doesn't seem shady....

The winner and the under bidder seem like they set snipes above VCP average to ensure a win (that backfired), but the 0 feedback bidder stopping at $225 (probably close to the VCP average before this $280 sale) seems like a shill setting the "bottom" where either it goes over VCP average, or he keeps the card.

    That's just my take.

The under bidder has 50% bidding activity but they have only bid on two items in the past 30 days.

Their feedback is not very high so this could easily be a collector who is only looking for certain cards in a certain grade. I don't see this as a major red flag at all.

The zero feedback bidder does look potentially like a shill but since you and the under bidder were willing to pay more it really doesn't impact the outcome of the auction. Your snipes collided and you get the final price of the auction.

If you want to see if there is more evidence that the zero feedback bidder is up to no good then come back to the auction in a week and then two and see if their feedback has changed and what their activity looks like at that point.

A 4 went for $250.00 back in June. This is a nice looking 6. I think you did fine.

Shill bidding is unavoidable in my opinion. I have decided that I will not bid any higher than I am willing to pay, if I do that I simply tell myself that win or lose, I can live with the result.

Centering on your card is better than most. Two Hall-of-Famers in a PSA 6......................I would be happy!

Thanks for your responses, it does look like the underbidder was legit but don't feel great about some of the earlier bids. Although it cost top bid amount,I would rather overpay for a card I want than underpay for one that I feel iffy about. Was tired of looking for this card centered so went a little bit bonkers with my snipe. Mostly happy with this:

This should always be the golden rule when bidding at auction. Never allow
yourself to get caught up in a bidding frenzy. Set your upper limit well before
the auction ends, then snipe that amount. If you get it for that or under, great.
If not, you didn't bid more than you were comfortable spending. Win, win.

By the way, I'm not a collector of '57 Topps, so forgive me if this is common
knowledge, but is that Moose Skowron sitting behind Mantle? Sure looks
    like him.

Yes it's Moose and on the other side It is Howard...

    Nice true Ex-Mint card Pat.

    Shilled, probably.

David, it would impact if the snipes were set after the shill drove the price up, not everyone sets snipes early...

    Good for you.

The under bidder's activity has dropped to 16% and I think they are just not a very active collector. There is no way to truly know but it appears that way to me.

Unfortunately the zero feedback bidder does look iffy with their feedback still being at zero and they already have a bid retraction.

On the bright side that card looks nice and you got one you like.

The zero is a shill in my opinion. The underbidder is most likely OK, but does have an unusually high bid activity with the seller.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • OT: do you put something over the card when you scan it? Why is the background purple? I've seen others that look like it and always wondered.

Yes, I put a piece of purple printer paper over my scans as a dark background like this better picks up the corners/edges of a card than just a clear or white background
