Good work Tom. And agreed, on a given a day, a bump to a 8 is not of the question IMO.
  • My limited experience with KSA regarded two 1970 OPC baseball cards. One, a Seaver #300 graded a KSA 9, that came back a PSA 8. The other, a Pete Rose All Star #458, graded KSA 8. It came back as a PSA 8. I broke them out of the holders before submitting. You never know what can happen. Nice result on the Gretzky Tom.

I hope I am wrong (again) but I don't think it'll ever get into an 8 holder because of the centering and the centering of the oil dot in the Oilers logo. Two major distractions that bring down the overall appearance of the card, IMO.

It's still a beautiful card and I am super happy the crossover was a success!

My thoughts on KSA graded cards....

Even though they don't have the best reputation, I would think there are lots of good cards in there holders.
    Think about it...

I don't see many people at all sending cards from the US to KSA. Most if not all the cards are coming from Canada
The average person up there would probably send cards if interested in grading to KSA.
Most people don't doctor cards and good stuff is getting slabbed

In the case of the Gretzky OPC rookie, the advantage I had was I got to see it when I bought it.
This was not a eBay purchase. I was not looking at scans which can make it difficult at times to tell if a card has been trimmed.

I am not out looking for KSA cards but just saying that even though there mAY be bad stuff in there holders, I bet there are lots of good cards as well

  • I definitely agree and doubt anyone would say they're all bad. In my experience, I have had mostly good results with KSA cards, including a couple higher end (a Howe rookie, some nicer vintage). But, as with anything, *buyer beware*. It is also almost certainly true that it is *more likely* that a KSA card is tampered with or contains a hard to see flaw than an equivalent card graded by PSA. Be careful. And, remember: a little knowledge can be dangerous.

Sounds like KSA and PSA were pretty consistent with this card. Congrats!

    Tom,

Congratulations. That is a terrific success story. Is it on your site yet?

BTW, if anyone is looking to consign, Tom is first rate. He has done a great job on my consignments. Keep up the great work.

It is a tough card. Whatever the outcome, if you're interested in selling the Islanders card let me know as I'd like to add one to my personal collection.
  • Congrats on the Gretzky card! KSA can be all over the place - I wouldn't buy any from the East Coast.
I recently looked at a Gretzky rookie that was raw and passed on it because it was undersized and looked trimmed on one side.
I figured if (and it was a big IF) PSA did grade it, the grade would be a 5.5 at most.
The seller went to the KSA booth at the card show and got a 7 for it.

  • To all the haters out there for KSA. It depends where the card was graded. KSA has 3 different locations. Nathan is the best out all 3. The location in upper Canada and the one around Montreal both suck at grading. I have bought cards, sold cards and crossed over cards breaking them out. Never had a problem with them. Yes 1 grade lower but I have also had 1 grade higher as well, so all in all if I broke out 100 cards with a average grade of a 8 I would have all cards come back as a average 8. I buy the card and not the holder. If it is in a KSA holder and it looks overgraded then chances are it was graded by one of the other locations that over grades cards so I don't buy or bid on it.
It's like PSA opening another location to grade cards. If the same people are not doing it then there is no consistency. Hence KSA gets a bad rep because of the other locations. I bought some KSA cards awhile ago at a card show. 1952 Parkhurst mainly. I got to look at the cards before they got graded and after they got graded. The Howe I thought for sure was a 9 8.5 minimum even under PSA standards. KSA graded it at a 8. Even I asked why just a 8 ? Said back showed a little to much aging. I laughed inside because I have dealt with 52 parkies for over 30 years. This card especially should cross to a PSA 8 or higher. Haven't done much with cards lately because i'm doing my other hobby. Fixing up my 1966 Charger right now to show room condition, so the cards have just been sitting around for now.
To all the KSA haters out there, thank you. Means more cards for me !!
    Cheers, Steve

PS. Congrats on that Gretzky !!
