My Weekend in Pittsburgh

It truly pained me to miss my 2nd consecutive National. I'm hoping I'll we be able to attend next years show in Chicago. It didn't stop me from picking up items maybe I wasn't really looking for, maybe they found me. I started my vacation a week after the national had ended and headed to Pittsburgh for the weekend with my good buddy Matt Miller. My dad might met us in the steel city to take in a few games at PNC park. On the way up we started talking about maybe swinging by some card shops in Pittsburgh Friday or even Saturday. Matt got on his smart phone and found that Steel City Collectibles is only 20 mins outside of Pittsburgh. He started to scan their web site and noticed they had a lot of wax. We decided to put together an order, it was mostly junk wax 2-87 Fleer Cello box 1-Box of 87 Fleer rack box and some newer stufff 2013 Bowman Prospects and 2011 Topps Update rack packs. (Looking for Trout) We swung by Steel City picked up our stuff and headed for the hotel in downtown Pittsburgh. My dad already arrived and since we didn't have tickets for Fridays game he walked over the BO and purchased tickets. During the 5th or 6th inning of Fridays game Matt and I walked the concourse to view our seats for Saturday night which I purchase in June. We noticed on the 3rd base side there was a memorabilia stand, so we stopped to take a look at what they had. As a Pirates fan I started to drool all over the show cases. I wish I took pictures now, but they had a nice full game 7 1960 world series ticket graded by PSA. They had ton of auto cards of Pirate players of today as well as the past. They had 2 low grade SGC Clemente rookies. but what really caught my eye in the case was the two McCutchen bats that were signed with the inscription 2013 NL MVP. I asked the girl who was running the stand more about the bats, because there was a two-tone bat that someone just purchase which I liked, but she said she thought that was the last two tone bat they had in stock. She also commented that Cutch only signed 36 of these bats for the whole year. (18 two tone and 18 solid cherry) I decided the next night to splurge since I didn't make it to the national. Yep I bought the solid cherry bat! I just want thank you for letting me share my story with the community. I had a wonderful weekend not just with my dad, but with one of my best friends. I also picked up a OPC Mario Lemieux rookie while I was on vacation too. I needed to stay with the Pittsburgh theme.
On a side note on the box rip. We both pulled some nice Bonds, Bo's and Clarks. Larkins were OC. Matt did pull a Trout from 2011 Topps Update racks.

<< <i>Awesome trip! And the Mario...wow! Did you buy it graded from a shop? >>
Thanks, I bought the card on ebay.

Sounds like a great trip and more than acceptable National replacement! Those 87F Larkin's are notoriously OC R/L, even the glossy's.

Hope to see you and Matt at Gibsons next year!

I had the chance last year to attend a game at PNC, and WOW is that a great park. I'm a Yankees fan but I'm not a big fan of their new enormo-stadium. PNC was a very welcoming environment with great views and a cool vibe. Hope I get back there again.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

<< <i>What did you order at Primanti's? Hot egg and cheese? (That's my favorite!) >>
I had the Ham/Cheese
<< <i>noticed your visit to Primanti brothers........I was at Pittsburgh University two weeks ago on a college visit with my daughter and we went to the one by the university.....sandwichs are awesome. Didn't realize until we got there that Forbes Field used to be right there also....we walked near where the stadium used to be....another great moment......being from Parma, Ohio which is near Cleveland and our big city I was impressed with the area....... >>
AL, we drove by that one when we went to Pitt to visit Forbes field. There's 3 locations that I know of. We went to the original one in the strip district. It was the first time in 3 visits at Primanti's that I finished the sandwich.
