Mantle - 1959 Topps - My new LOW GRADE pickup.

My thanks to the TPG who first decided that a pinhole equates to an automatic "1". Picked this up for "1" money as well.
IMO, nicer than most 2s and 3s out there.

That is a real beauty! I am surprised it went for "1" money.

I would have set a nuclear snipe for that card relative to what they go for! That is what I dream about is finding cards like that.

Doug, I am amazed and impressed. I have seen some real beauties in the "low grade, great eye appeal" threads. But none of them come close to this one, which really takes the cake. Very nice!

Dan, I accidentally deleted it and then could not find it again. At least I found a Mantle! I'll try to get back the old one later on.

Dan, you have to remember that Doug is old and computers don't always cooperate for him. image

Seriously though, that is a great pickup Doug. It is amazing what you can find if you are patient and wait. Congrats!!!

  • That is one hell of a card. I hunt centered low grade mantles and that is one stunning PSA 1! I actually need a 59 Topps like that for my run but no cards for me until I get a 52 Topps.

    Well done sir!

    Hiya Doug

I forgot to post on this card.

    I agree - it's a beauty with a pinhole - super pickup!

I have a few like that in my T3 collection.

I love seeing these kind of pickups as much as a high grade gem.

I agree with akuracy's post right above and then some; I would go so far as to say a pickup like this impresses me much more as a collector-- because while we expect most high grade cards to look great (as they should), in contrast it is a VERY RARE "PSA 1" that looks so fantastic.

In fact I would say the overall number of 1959 Mantles, for example, in grades 1-3 that look as good is far fewer than the number of 8s and 9s that look good, making such a 1 as Doug's incredibly special.

An interesting quantification: there are 311 specimens of the 1959 Mantle graded 8 and above without qualifiers, that cost from $2000 to $7000-ish. Of those 311 cards, I would have to assume 75% are really nice and worthy of the assigned grade, if not a much higher percentage.

Meanwhile, there are 433 PSA 1s, 1.5s, and 2s. Considering the usual amount of wear for a card to be assigned a low grade like that, I would venture that a mere fraction of those 433 would be as nice as Doug's. Maybe 10%? Even a whopping 25% of the 433 would mean only 108 examples are that nice, though again I would hazard the percentage is way lower.

Yet either way, it is a harder feat to accomplish, in terms of finding the elusive diamond in the rough, to get Doug's "1" than it is to get a nice looking 8 or 9. And the irony is that this tougher chase pays off in that the "1" costs just $100. Even if it cost $300, I think it would be a tremendous value.
