Check Out the 1972 Topps Series 1 Box at MLI - Getting Strong Action

This is not my box, nor do I know who owns it but with the BP it's already at $10350!

Whoever bought the series 3 box from BBCE at National got a hell of a deal IMO. Series 1
is far from the best series in that year.

I'm guessing there is at least one more bid on this one.

Very strong action on that one. Series 1 does have the Fisk RC and Mays though, doesn't it?

And also the IA cards, too--I have a Series 1 72 jumbo cello with Yaz IA on back.

Still a very impressive price though for 24 packs in the box at almost $500 a pack (with BP)!

The full box premium is in full effect. I got a GAI 8 3rd series pack for $175 in May. These box prices just don't translate to per pack prices.

Yes, Yaz, Kill and Mays have IA cards.

The series 3 box at national was $8k. This series 1 box looks like it could approach $11k. When you compare the series
it seems like the series 3 was a bargain, because they are reasonably comparable to each other (and of course, wouldnt
you know that the bulk of the star power and low pops comes in the later series)

The stars/lo pop breakout by series is:

    Series 1
    Pirates
    Pizarro (Green)
    Martin
    Martin IA
    Yaz
    Yaz IA
    Mays
    Mays IA
    Killebrew
    Killebrew IA
    Fisk RC
    Perez
    LL Cards
    F Robinson
    James (Green)
    Gibson
    Morgan

    Series 2
    Chambliss RC
    Kingman RC
    Blue IA
    Cepeda
    Hough RC
    Brock
    ALCS (Robinson)
    WS (Clemente)
    Allen
    Fingers
    F Alou

    Series 3
    Palmer
    McCovey
    Perry
    McRae IA
    Aaron
    Aaron IA
    Clemente
    Clemente IA
    Aparicio
    Weaver
    Hunter
    Seaver BH
    Anderson

    Series 4
    Oliva

    Seaver IA
    Stargell
    Stargell IA
    Hodges
    Baylor
    Harrelson IA
    B Robinson BH
    Torre
    T Williams

    Series 5/6
    Sutton

Yes that was a good move! I do see Steve Hart's name in the description. image

  • About 8 years ago my brother had a gentleman walk into his store and put 1 1972 Topps Baseball series 1 wax box on his counter and asked $600 for it. My brother bought it and said do you have any more? The man said yes I have around 60 more of them!!!! After it was all said and done he bought them all with complete series 1-6 in multiples along with cello boxes as well. He ended up selling many boxes to Hal Stienbreiner who at the time did not own the Yankees George did. He then put around 15 of them in an auction that sold as one lot. The average price he sold a box for was $6000. I often thought he should of kept a full series set for himself of 1-6...

    That's an amazing story!

That is a strong bid for this box, but you don't see series 1 come around very often. I imagine the first series was their best seller and that not much survived unopened.

I contacted Steve about the series 3 box. He actually had two(!) but sold both at the National.

Wow, and to think I picked up a 3rd series box about 15 years ago for $5999 in an auction that also included a 1973 series 2 box and 1974-76 full boxes. Wish I had held onto them. I still have a few packs from each year but most I opened or sold on eBay.

8 years ago every 72 series sold for 2500-3000. 5th/6th sold for about 4500 .

even a year ago packs could be picked up for 150 bucks.

Yup, that haul would command about 45K today!

A friend of mine has a box of unopened 1972 wax. I am not sure which series but I do think it is series I. I tried but he won't part with it. I guess I will have to keep trying.
