Very sad. I thought he had put those struggles behind him.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Terrible news Loved his work but really loved his turn as Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting. One of my absolute favorite movies ever and he was a big reason. God Speed Robin.
So profoundly sad; he was so incredibly gifted. He's been pretty open about his depression and frequent thoughts of suicide. You just hoped it would never come to this; and, unfortunately, it did.
One of my very favorite actors. Agree with others that he was excellent in Good Will Hunting. My favorite role he played, however, was Dr. Sayer in "Awakenings." That is a very powerful movie if you've never seen it.
Always thought it should have won Best Picture in 1990 instead of "Dances With Wolves."
"Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood."
I have a close friend who is a funny and winning guy on his own. He worked with Williams a couple of times and I guess Williams was every bit as amazing on a set as you would expect. The first time they met they were the last 2 guys being considered for an Illinois bell commercial before Williams was big. Apparently Williams had the room rolling on the floor and my friend didn't have a chance walking in after him.
Williams was one of a kind and will be missed for sure. I can't even imagine what it would be like to have so many thoughts going so many places all at once. There's no off switch on a brain like that. We are lucky he was able to channel it into the performances he shared with us.

Just to tie this into baseball in a distant way, Williams had SF Giants season tickets near first base since AT&T park opened. My former boss has been a season ticket holder from the start as well and his tickets are near where Williams seats are, though a bit farther back from the field. He goes to most games and only saw Williams attend once the first year the stadium opened. He probably gave away most of the tickets. Danny Glover also has tickets near Williams' seat. I did see him at a game once and he attends more often.
Minds like Williams' are strange ones...being constantly "on" causes really high highs and really low lows, I'm sorry he wasn't able to get out of this valley. Such a shame and a loss.
I'm heartbroken when I think about another beautiful life cut short.
Please, please, please - if you are fighting depression, or hurting and don't know where to turn and considering suicide, reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255. Right NOW. Please.
I am also available to talk. I want to tell you how much you matter, how much you are loved. I'm not professionally trained as a counselor, but I have been there and tried that. That makes me somewhat qualified to speak love and truth into your life.
It wasn't too long ago that a forum member killed himself. In fact, approximately 37,000 people a year in this country take their own lives. I provide suicide prevention training in my community (QPR= Question, Persuade, Refer). I think it is fair to say that most of us have some type of experience in our lives of losing someone we know. I can't help but wonder how we consider an individual brave for fighting something physical but if it has to do with mental illness, well, that person is judged rather harshly. I'd like for us to progress as people to not let this stigma exist so people would be more willing to get the help they need. I'll choose to remember Mr. Williams as someone who brought a lot of joy and laughter to this world. He was in attendance at a wrestling tournament I was coaching at years ago. He was great to all those that visited him that day. RIP.

I had such a brutal, stressful day at work but when I heard this news, I realized my problems pale in comparison to the issues suffered by others. I recently watched Robin's first appearance on Johnny Carson, a classic appearance - you just knew he was going to be great.
Very sad, I am a huge fan. I had the opportunity to meet him a few times. He hit rock bottom emotionally and financially so many times. He actually had a solid plan this time. I really thought he was going to turn everything around. RIP
I saw him as a street performer in San Francisco at the piers. He was crazy! I said then he would be a famous comedian. A few years later he was in the SF Comedy Competition a very prestigous competition where only the top comedians perform and he came in second despite being the overwhelming favorite of the crowd. He was very gracious to the winner (Michael Pritchard!) He was at his comedic best in an uncredited role in 1988's The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen as the King of the Moon where he was at odds with body and his head! A must see!

Absolutely riveting performance when Robin and Matt are sitting on the bench. One of his best roles and best performance. If I watch the movie I must see that scene.
W.C.Fields "I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
I remember the time I was in the village on a Saturday night at The Comedy Cellar around 2004/2005. A group of my friends and I were watching local comedians that night. Then, out of nowhere, comes this person flying down the stairs to the stage. It was Robin Williams who just came by to visit one of his old stomping grounds.
He then entertained the crowd for a good 20 minutes practicing his routine for an HBO Comedy Special he was filming that week.
He later came by our table and shook our hands since he heckled one of our friends a bit
It's a special memory I have of a great comedian, actor, and person. He truly was a class act and will be missed.
Up there with George Carlin as the best comedian I've seen. RIP Robin.
I once worked with the aunt of Robin Williams' second wife, Marsha Garces, who told me how quiet he was the few times she met him. She actually told me I was much funny than Robin, but I told her it was because I was comfortable around her and that I too was shy around unfamiliar people. Wish I had gotten the chance to meet him in person.
And great shout out by Geordie regarding depression. A lot of guys you would never think of struggle with it and it is easier to hide than you think. It is never as bad as it seems, but it is hard in the moment to see. And don't judge Robin for his choice, not that anyone here has, as it is hard to understand unless you experience depression yourself.

If you all will forgive this stream of consciousness:
First off, I am by no means trying to compare myself with Robin Williams. None of us can even begin to comprehend what he may have been dealing with. His death has been a complete shock to me. Bill Cosby, George Carlin and Robin Williams all helped me establish my sideways view of life - looking at life with humor and seeing the absurdity and outrageous-ness that is the existence we all share.
I am 47 years old. And like most guys my age (I am guessing here), I have been having several 'holy crap' moments these past several months (closer to retirement than to college graduation, not as young as I used to be, etc.) about where I am in my life and where I fit in with all of this. I can look on paper and around myself and see that my life is pretty darn good (see my bids on the group rip ). But I have also had my doubts about where and who I am and last winter started having some really bad trouble dealing with it. I recently had back surgery, and true to a promise I made to my wife, I made an appointment to go talk to someone just yesterday morning. The appointment is for next Monday. Then I hear about Robin's death.
Again - I am not trying to compare myself with him - just count me as another in the growing choir of those urging you if you think you need to - talk to someone. Anyone. Even if it is just to bounce things off of and reassure yourself you are ok, talk to someone. I know long run I will be ok, but if only one person can be saved by all this urging, then his passing will not be in vain.
In closing, the one quote of his that keeps going through my mind today - "It's your move, chief".
Take care all, God Bless and RIP Robin.
