David Weygant

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
This was posted elsewhere, but I felt this information deserved its own thread.

David Weygant sadly passed away on August 4th. He was not well for some time, and from what I heard, he was expecting this. He attended shows up until the end and was planning to attend to ANA.

In honor of Dave, post a coin you purchased from him, or some of your positive dealings with him.

image I'm very sad to hear this. I talked to Dave at several shows over the years. His enthusiasm for collecting coins was infectious and he always had the most beautiful stuff which he gladly let me inspect. I hadn't talked to him for a few years, I didn't know he was sick. He was a great guy.

  • So sorry to hear about Dave Weygant. I bought this amazing 1892 quarter from him ... though "only" an MS66, it was his favorite BQ ever, and one of my favorites from my entire set. This image doesn't really do it justice; it's a beautiful lustrous coin. Dave was always on my short list of pleasant people to visit with at shows, and he always had nice coins.

All of my dealings with him were positive. This is truly sad news as he was just an amazing person.

He told me that he was retired, but was so enthusiastic about numismatics, he kept working as a dealer. He sold me an 1837 Reeded Edge Half in MS 64 (no pics). Doug, I saw that quarter you bought in his case. That Barber Quarter was his pride and joy. The pic doesn't do it justice, and I know you paid a relative fortune for the date and grade.

I'm really sorry to hear this as I enjoyed getting to know Dave at shows. We did bump heads once when I bought 3 coins off him on EBay about a decade ago totaling around $18K. I called him once received to mention I would be returning 2 under his no question asked refund policy and unknown at the time his wife was ill and he snapped and sent me my favorite dealer email ever. He was right as I am extremely picky however my looses upon resale by being so for nearly 4 decades have been far less then nights out at any casino.

Einstein once said "a sure sign of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result".
I think it is absolutely fruitless for you to bid on any more of my coins.
You are obviously looking for something I cannot provide. ie ms 65 and 66 coins housed in a ms 64 holder.
As I tried to explain (before losing my patience) if it were not for the few hairlines on this coin, it would most certainly be graded ms 65 or higher. If a ms 64 coin does not have hairlines (seen only at a specific angle) it will most certainly have bag marks.(this coin does not). Or it will be lacklustre.( this coin is not.)Or it will be weakly struck.(this coin is not) Or it will have little eye appeal (This coin has plenty). It MUST have something that keeps it from the next grade. You seem unwilling to acknowledge this. This coin is a MS64 and a very high end one at that!

I have never had this much aggravation from any buyer who will not understand the reality of the grading system. I wish you luck and send my condolences to any future dealer who has to deal with this kind of nonsense. I will refund your money as per my policy and will block you from further harrassing me by bidding on my coins on ebay. I have too many satisfied and knowledgable customers to deal with and my life is way too short to be upset.

PS: Might I suggest that you change your area of collecting to modern coins in the ms 70 and proof 70 grade. They are beautiful and flawless.

What I liked most about David is that he would always make time to chat and share his knowledge. I both bought and sold to him, and he always was a gentleman. The hobby has lost a great person. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Dave Weygant was a great guy. I enjoyed talking with him and his wife at shows. He had a background as a teacher, and I can surmise confidently that he was an excellent teacher. He will be missed. I have one coin in my barber half set, the 1914. that I bought from Dave. It was graded as PCGS MS 65 when I bought it, and as a testament to his handling of quality coins, the coin upgraded to MS 65+ when I had it re-graded, once plus grades were instituted.

Dave, you were a class act and I will miss you.

This is just horrible, horrible news. A very sad day indeed for all of numismatics. image

The quality of Mr. Weygant's coins was only surpassed by the quality of Mr. Weygant's character.

    He will be dearly missed.
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.

    RIP, my friend.

I enjoyed talking with him at shows, and we shared more than a few dinners on the road.

I loved his stories about interactions that he had at shows with other folks.

In fact, when I greeted him at shows, I would not say, "Hi". Instead I would say, "How do you deal?"

That was the key line from one of my favorite stories of his (it refers to an interaction he had with a vest pocket dealer at a show ... you just had to be there to hear Dave tell it. Sadly, now no one else will ever hear that story from him).

Very sad to hear. It was heartbreaking to have him come by the table at Baltimore to basically say goodbye.

    He will be missed.

This was my favorite purchase from Dave as this was one heck of no motto 08-D for a PCGS MS64. It also had a neat provenance as it was part of the The Emile A. Tartakow collection who was a diamond dealer in Hollywood California in the 1930's. The existence of his multimillion dollar collection was unknown to his heirs for over 50 years until discovered 3 generations later by his descendants behind a false wall during renovations in the garage. Sorry I don't have any better photos as the Goldberg's don't really do it justice but I had a Olympus D-340R 1.2MP Digital Camera back then which wasn't so hot in macro mode.

I considered Dave a friend beyond our common bond of numismatics. We both lived in the same town in south central Florida, and it wasn't all that long ago that we were discussing such mundane things as cutting the grass, who sold the best lawnmowers in town, and redoing the tile in the house. He was always one of the first people I sought out when going to FUN conventions. His wife Mary Lou and I would always talk about their kids and my daughter, you know, the usual drama and accomplishment our kids were going through. Unfortunately he passed on the fourth this month and this is the first I've heard of it, we moved further south three years ago. My condolences to his children and his wife Mary Lou, Dave is going to be missed.

Edited to add, thanks Tom and brg5658 for posting the link to the obit.

I did some photography work for David back in 2006-2008, and he was always a wonderful guy to do business with.

At the ANA show in San Francisco in 2005, I was with another dealer, set up next to David. At the end of one of the days, I noticed a couple of valuable coins sitting out in the open on his back table, and they were gone for the day - obviously they forgot the coins sitting out and left without noticing them. I took the coins, locked them in my bag, and returned them to him the next morning. He was very grateful and tried to give me a "reward" for the safe keeping of his inventory. I refused it because I believe looking out for your neighbors is just something you do...without expecting anything in return. He always remembered me for that good deed. I believe the coins I stored for him were in excess of $15K.

I am saddened to hear this. Even thought we all knew Dave's health was not good it is an unpleasant surprise.

Dave was a good friend and we bought and sold coins back and forth together. His hearty laugh will be what I miss the most. I always tried hard to get that smile and laugh out of him one way or another because it caused me to do the same. I remember one show he had a 1939 Oregon set all by its lonesome in a single case. You could see those coins from 3 rows away and they were utterly amazing. I literally tripped over something as I started to pass and then stopped suddenly drawn to those 3 stunning coins.

You are missed by all and my condolences to Dave's family.

I've bought and sold many coins with Dave. I always enjoyed his company and opinion. I recall at one show all there was a 1939 Oregon Set all by itself in the case that you could see from 3 rows away, the coins were simply amazing. I literally tripped over something as I started to pass and then stopped suddenly drawn to those 3 stunning coins and couldn't take my eyes of them. He had that hearty laugh too and I always tried to draw that smile and laugh out of him when we ran across each other because it always caused me to laugh and smile too.

You will be missed by all Dave, and my condolences to your wife and family.

I believe I met Dave because Todd (BluCC) mentioned a coin Dave had that I should go see. I stopped by his table every Baltimore show thereafter -- he was always a pleasure to talk to and I always liked the look of his inventory. Here's one he sold me:
