Lol let me explain what Matt's talking about. Andre Tippett is making an appearance about 25 minutes from my house in a couple of weeks. I've met him before, but I didn't get a photo and my sons haven't met him. I'd like to go, but we have a scheduling conflict. Still trying to figure it out.

OK, one more Gino card down, and one step closer to being the only one at 100% on his current master set composite. Here is the latest addition:

    image

Edit to add: I'm not crazy about the PD in the bottom right, but I can always buy a better 8 someday and give this one to one of my kids.

Still looking for my white whale: His 1969 Eskimo Pie hand cut Cappelletti/Dale Livingston. Do any of you know anybody who collects that set or might have a lead on where to find one? Mike Mosier at Columbia City wasn't able to help at this time.
  • Nice card! Glad to see you moving closer to 100% completion!

Nice card! Now can you go put that one back up for sale so I can buy it? Oh wait, wrong thread.

Yeah, that card will screw with your eyes no matter what. Even ones that are centered 50/50 L/R look OC because the photo is so weird, with his head off to one side.

Way to go Dan!! You made a nice, sharp addition. Good luck on getting this set finished up!!
  • DanBessetteDanBessette Posts: 6,421 ✭✭✭
Very happy to add these to my collection, cheap cheap on eBay

    image

These were distributed in 1966. The one on the left that says "AFL All Stars" is from a Coke bottle, and the "Patriots" one on the right is from Tab soda. I've also seen Sprite caps with his photo and name, and there were apparently Fanta and Fresca ones too. I'd like to pick those up someday. Apparently the other soda brands/flavors are a little scarcer and therefore carry a slightly higher value than Coke caps.

A team set was distributed in each team's area, and then the AFL All Stars set was distributed nationwide.

There was an AFL set in 1965 too, but Gino wasn't included. And there was a Patriots set in '65, which did include Gino. But we know mine is from '66, because the "Coke" side includes the words "caramel colored."

C24 and C47 are the numbers in the set. Does anybody know what the codes to the right of the cap mean? One reads E-K and the other begins with F but I can't make out the rest.

Anyway, at this point it looks like I'm looking for 13 more caps: all 5 brands from the '65 Patriots set, 4 remaining brands from the '66 Patriots set and 4 remaining brands from the '66 national AFL All Stars set.

(Edited after I learned more in the Beckett book).

Nice additions! Sounds like it will be a challenge to get all the variations of those caps.
  • DanBessetteDanBessette Posts: 6,421 ✭✭✭
My apologies in advance to those of you who find this boring as heck....

OK guys, in my continuing research, I found out that Gino was included in the '65 AFL set (I just missed him), however the '65 sets each only had 4 brands. Also he was included in a '64 Patriots set. So, here is the complete Gino checklist, as far as I know. Took one off, put 6 on.

1964 Patriots: Coke and Sprite variations. Numbered by jersey number, so Gino should be #20

1965 AFL All Stars: # C41. Four brands - Coke, Tab, Fanta, Sprite.

1965 Patriots: #C24. Coke, Tab, Fanta, Sprite.

1966 AFL All Stars: #C47. Five brands - Coke, Tab, Fanta, Fresca, Sprite.

1966 Patriots: #C24. Coke, Tab, Fanta, Fresca, Sprite.

The tricky part is that he is the same number in the '65 and '66 team sets. The Coke caps are easy to tell apart, as I said, because the '66 one says "caramel colored," while the '65 does not. However, my Patriots cap #C24 is Tab brand, so at this point I'm not sure whether it's from '65 or '66. I wonder if this is where the code to the right of his head could be helpful?

The AFL All Stars is from 1966. We know this for 2 reasons. First, the cap # is C47. Also, it is Coke brand and does say "caramel colored" on the outside.

Sorry guys, I know most of you are probably bored to tears, but hopefully a couple of you find it interesting. I'm not searching for these caps too actively, but as I add them I'll update this thread.

Without giving it much thought, after glancing at it, I assumed the E-K was his position as in End-Kicker, but the other cap with what looks like FLB would seem to quash this theory. Do they look like positions on other players caps?

Good thought. I'd have to look at others. "FL" could be for flanker.

Edited to add: that's definitely it, as seen on these caps. Boy do I feel stupid! But thank you very much for your help.

And I guess that conclusively determines that, with the '65 and '66 Tab, Fanta and Sprite caps, it's impossible to distinguish one year from the other.

No problem. Enjoy the thread by the way.

I'm racking my brain trying to figure out who Gino looks like. I'm thinking maybe a TV or movie star?

Dan, the bottle caps are very cool!

Back in the early 80's, I once opened 2 entire 8 packs of Pepsi, while my parents weren't looking to see what was under the cap during one those collectible giveaways. I could not figure out how my dad knew I did it. It could not be the fact that every pop was flat, could it? I regretted that move for weeks, as there was no allowance for buying cards.

I can see a resemblance, but I was thinking someone more in the 50s or 60s.

Has anybody noticed my new sig line? I got the card below as a Father's Day gift and now I'm proud to say I am the owner of the #1 current finest Gino Cappelletti Master Set!

    image

I was number 4 in the standings, but the #1 set was retired and the owner sold me this PSA 9 I needed. I'm a Gino super fan, probably THE Gino super fan, so this is a happy day! Please, if you haven't before, check out the Gino set linked in my sig.

    Plans for improvement:
    1. First and foremost, I need to add a 64 Topps in PSA 8 to "complete" the set.
    2. I put "complete" in quotes, because I continue to hunt for my "white whale" and if i ever find it I plan to add it to the master composite. I'm still looking for a 1969 Eskimo Pie Dale Livingston/Gino Cappelletti. PSA grades the set, but has never graded that single, and in fact I've never seen one
    3. I expect, after registry awards season, that PSA will return to the scoring system that awards bonus points for items that are pop 1, none higher. That would turn my PSA 5 Glendale Stamp into a 7.

Thanks guys, I'm pretty damn excited tonight!

Congrats on getting the number one spot! He has a tiny registry like my Bosworth. Besides the Eskimo Pie card, any others that you can add to expand?

Dan, congratulations my man. I know how passionate you are about Gino and this set. I am happy you have made it to the top rung of the set, now I wish you luck on finishing it. Thanks for sharing your journey.

When I joined his registry, it was only 12 items. I added the 1969 Glendale stamp to the composite and I own the only 2 graded copies. The Eskimo Pie is the only other card I'm aware of that I could add. He's on some team issued photos, but those are too large for any PSA slab. I wanted to get PSA to add the bottle caps, but they refused to grade them.

Gino's career was 11 years, and they didn't issue a card of him for the first 2 years. That's a little crazy that he had to lead the league in scoring before they issued his RC. The other thing that's working against a larger master set is that his career ended in 1970, before the food issues boom of the mid to late 70s. I think if I ever find and add the Eskimo Pie card, that's going to be about it for growing the master composite.

Congrats on getting to number 1, Dan! Had to be a great feeling. Awesome getting to know your love for Cappelletti and all of the autos! Slabbing those caps would rock but PSA....

Nice going! Congrats on being #1!

Thanks to all of you for your kind comments. I'm only #1 by the slimmest of margins, but I will continue to build my set and lock down that spot. Hoping to get my first badge next year.

And yes, I know many of you hadn't heard of Gino before I came along, but that makes your support of my player collecting even nicer. And hopefully you've learned something about a forgotten AFL great.

Regarding autos, I've got 3 more cards I sent out last week TTM. Hope to get those back soon.

    Nice going Dan!

I know you love your cards and really don't care too much about being number one but it's a nice accomplishment regardless.
  • DanBessetteDanBessette Posts: 6,421 ✭✭✭
Thanks Matt, you hit the nail on the head. #1 feels nice, but of more importance to me is expanding the master set composite as much as I can and being 100% complete with nice copies of all.

Today was a great day in collecting for me. Not only was I very happy with the grades I received on the red flip group sub, but I also received this terrific TTM return from my man Gino.

    image

He's so gracious to his fans. That's the 64 Topps UER on the left. On the right is a 1969 Glendale stamp. That set seems to be pretty scarce and I hoarded a bunch of Patriots sheets not too long ago. I currently own the only 2 PSA graded copies, a complete sheet, and this autographed copy. The 64 Topps gets me to 4 out of 7 in a signed run of his basic Topps cards. I now have 11 total autographs of his (and counting).
  • Great cards. You KNOW that Glendale is a 1/1. Not another in the world like it. A very special item!

A few days after I sent those last two, I sent a 1970 Topps. I included 20 bucks, even though he signs for free, because I felt guilty sending 3 cards so close together. When he returned my card, he included something else that I think is super cool!

    image

For those who don't get it, 20 was Gino's jersey number. Pretty stoked right now!

Very cool of him and you for being kind enough to pay him for his time.
  • Very nice collection!

After reading all the posts about Gino I felt compelled to send him a couple of cards yesterday. Sent a 64 and a 70 Topps.

Will do. I also sent a couple to Gino's Grand Opera partner in crime Vito "Babe" Parilli. He's not as gracious of a signer as Gino but I have seen a few successes here and there. Thought I would give him a shot.

That would be pretty awesome. I wish I had a Patriots card to send him. All I had was a couple of UD Conference Greats cards of him with Kentucky. Parilli is a guy that would be great to talk to. I would love to hear some Bear Bryant tales from his younger days.

The personal Rushmore thread got me thinking. For purposes of that thread, I limited myself to 4 total cards from my collection, but of course there are several other cards that are very special to me. I had the idea to do a Yaz Rushmore and a Gino Rushmore. I won't do a Hannah Rushmore, because I'm not far along enough yet in that endeavor. Here are my top 4 Gino cards, with both sentimental and monetary value considered:

Today was a huge day for my collection. For almost 2 years I've been looking for Gino's 64 Topps in PSA 8. I've passed on a couple that were badly tilted, so when 4SC listed this one I jumped on it. I overpaid by quite a bit, but happy I did. My Cappelletti master set is now 100% "complete." I hope to land the '69 Eskimo Pie card someday, but this is still a personal milestone.
