<< <i>I had no idea Cappelletti was such a badass. The guy played QB, WR, DB, KR and K. About the only thing he didn't do was be the water boy! >>
Cappelletti is the #2 all time leading scorer in AFL history. You've heard of the only guy who scored more: george Blanda. Gino was the 1964 AFL MVP. Between receiving TDs and kicks he scored almost 160 pts in a 14 game season. He retired as the all time leading scorer in Patriots history and held that crown for 30 years. The name of my registry set is "Gino Belongs in Canton" and I firmly believe that to be true.
Gino threw one career pass and it was a 27 yard TD, so he retired with a perfect QB rating, hahaha.
Dan, the 1969 is truly a beautiful card. I have been putting this set together and have not found a copy of this card yet that fits the bill for me. Nice work and congrats.
Kicking off the New Year with a bang! I received my first 2 card packages of 2015, both gifts from board members and terrific additions to my growing Cappelletti collection! A couple of firsts too.....
Got this gem from charrigan. Casey told me he was sending me a late Christmas gift and I've been looking forward to it, but didn't expect this! To be honest, I was expecting something hockey-related. But Casey had taken the time to check my registry set and hunt down a card I needed. This is my first PSA 10 in my entire collection and puts me at 50% complete on the Gino master set. I also have the highest weighted GPA on that registry at 8.49 . Cool all around. Thanks again, Casey!
Edited to add: this mini is a pop 3. There are no 11's.
About a week ago I was contacted out of the blue by thekid8 (Mike). I love his threads and have commented on them a bunch, but to be honest I don't think he and I had ever exchanged a single PM. He said some very kind things about my Cappelletti thread specifically, and my player threads in general, and asked for my address because he wanted to send me something. These arrived today and I was blown away.
I love Mike's first TD project thread and it was very exciting to hold a couple of his customs in hand. They came with a nice note, in which Mike said my Cappelletti thread inspired him to add Gino to the top of his TTM list. When he sent a custom, he sent a couple extra, and asked him to personalize one to me. He did all this without my knowledge and without even knowing me very well. The thoughtfulness of both of these gentlemen is mind-blowing. These autographs make 6 Cappelletti autos in my collection, and this is my FIRST personalized auto from him. Thanks again Mike!
Thanks Kyle, I'm really excited about it! I had raw copies of almost every Gino card before this thread, but in the time since I started this thread I've collected all the graded cards shown and 6 autographs. Best of all was getting to meet him.
<< <i>Very generous of Mike in deed. >>
And Casey too! Never expect a PSA 10 gem in the mail!
<< <i>Your player threads along with other members here are a big part of what brings me back every day. >>
Thanks for the kind words. I, too, really love the player collector threads on here! I'd slowly amassed a decent raw Yaz collection in the ten years before I joined these boards, and had casually collected Cappelletti for almost that long. But the time I spent on here learning about others' player collections is what inspired me to really step up my Yaz and Gino collections and start a Tippett collection. I owe a debt of gratitude to a number of forum members for that inspiration. I also really enjoy other "project" threads, like Mike's first HR and first TD, Barry's Fleer superstar multi signed cards, and Matt's Cowboys Backield Project.
Thanks again, to everyone mentioned here and everyone who takes the time to check out my player threads and comment on them.
Some exciting Gino poppage. This is the first copy ever graded and I was successful in getting it added to the master set composite.
For those who don't know, the Glendale Stamps are a tough set in general, as they are on a very flimsy stock and exhibit poor print quality. Their hand-cut nature of course adds another wrinkle. But Gino's stamp is even tougher, given that the back is misaligned with the front. What I mean is that, if the front is perfectly cut, one dashed border is missing from the back. If you cut it so that all 4 dashed borders are included, the front shows a sliver of the stamp to the left. I have owned 6 uncut sheets, from 3 different sources, and this was true on all of them.
I have a second (nicer?) Gino stamp on its way to PSA, as well as a Jim Nance from the same set. I will soon have the only 2 graded Cappelletti stamps and the only graded Nance. I'm thinking of requesting a Patriots team set on the registry, 12 stamps total.
Very excited about this one! I've always loved the Obak look in general, but I think the New England trees in the background make this one even cooler. This one is serial numbered 4/5. This makes 7 autos in the collection now.
This has been a tremendous week for my Gino collection, maybe the best back-to-back purchases I've ever made. The really super addition will be posted soon.....
Today is a huge day for my Cappelletti collection, the most significant card of his that I've ever picked up. A Valentine's Day present from my honey:
On the master set, this 65 tallboy is by far the most heavily weighted card. It's weighted 10.0, the max allowable, and twice the weight of the next highest Gino card. It counts as about 19% of the total set rating.
This is about the most beautiful 7 I've ever seen. I think it should be in an 8 holder, personally, with eye appeal through the roof. The scan doesn't even do it justice. Great card!
Dan, the 1965 is a very nice addition. Congrats! BTW, I am not sure the circumstances of your time out, but I am happy you are back. This is a better place with you here.
Dan, very nice '65 tall boy! And I must have missed it last month , but I'm just now noticing your custom-made autos from thekid8. Those are very cool, and even a personalized one! At this rate, Gino might include you in his will .
Another big addition to the master set, the last major hurdle that was standing between me and completion. This is his 1962 Fleer RC and I got this PSA 7 for a fantastic price
Sure it's his RC and heavily weighted on the registry. But this card really epitomizes what I love about Gino: his versatility. The front shows him kicking and lists his positions as halfback & end. The back describes how, after leading the team in scoring in 1960, Gino led the entire AFL in scoring in '61, with a combined 8 TD's rushing and receiving, 17 made FGs and 48 converted extra points. Oh and he returned punts and kicks and played some defensive back. I guess that's when they decided maybe he deserved to be on a card.
Truly a remarkable athlete and supreme team player.
Now only 4 cards short of 100% on the master set. Home stretch.
Blanda is #1 on the AFL's career scoring list and Cappelletti is #2. Amongst those versatile players from back then, I really like Lou The Toe Groza. I have quite a run of his raw cards.
Nice pickup! You've come very far on the master set in a relatively short period of time
Do you think Cap will ever get elected to the Football HOF as a seniors committee selection? It would be nice if that happened while he is still around.
<< <i>Nice pickup! You've come very far on the master set in a relatively short period of time

Thanks. I definitely think he's deserving. In fact a few years back I actually thought he was in, didn't realize he wasn't. Multitalented player and one of the very best pre-merger players, period. I think it's overdue. If you look at my master set, I named it "Gino Belongs in Canton"

I agree. The guy could do it all back in the day and was good doing it . That's a rare talent.
<< <i>Blanda is #1 on the AFL's career scoring list and Cappelletti is #2. Amongst those versatile players from back then, I really like Lou The Toe Groza. I have quite a run of his raw cards. >>
Dan, some great cards of Gino. Closing in on the last few. Awesome accomplishment. It's been fun watching your set progress.
Just a slight correction, Gino is the # 1 all-time AFL scorer. In 10 seasons he scored an even 1100 points, while Blanda is #2 with 936 points. Again these totals are AFL scoring only from 1960-69. If you add in Blanda's other AFC years, then he's # 1.
One card closer to completion. I'm not gonna lie, this is my least favorite photo on any of his items. He looks completely bewildered, like somebody in the distance shouted his name right when the cameraman snapped his shot. But as far as the card itself, this is a fantastic specimen.
The '63 Fleer design is a classic and this is Gino's 2nd year card. I think it's in great shape, with great color and really sharp corners. Very proud to add it. I have to say, Fleer did a fantastic job with their write-ups. As much as I appreciated the '62 write-up, I enjoy this one just as much. Really highlights his versatility and mentions his scoring records. As always, thanks for looking.
Edited to list the cards I'm looking for to complete my set:
1964 Topps #5 - probably PSA 8, maybe a 9 1967 Topps #3 - same grade as above 1970 Topps #7 - PSA 9
If you have any of these available, please contact me. Thanks!

If the HOF has a spot for Hornung then I don't see why Cappelletti doesn't.
Super Bowl XXVIII: Buffalo Bills vs Dallas Cowboys - Running back Emmitt Smith rushed for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns earning Super Bowl MVP honors as the Cowboys defeated the Bills 30-13 to win their second consecutive NFL title.
Got a nice gift in the mail today, from gregm13. I'd seen this card, or one like it, on eBay and didn't pull the trigger. Very happy it found its way to me anyway! Thanks Greg!
This is the 3rd autographed card I own from Gino's basic Topps run, along with the '68 and 69 Topps cards on page one of this thread. All of them will land in blue flips in the near future. As always, thanks for looking!
Does anybody collect the 1969 Eskimo Pie hand cut cards? If so, can you please check for the Cappelletti/Dale Livingston? This is my new white whale, in almost any condition.
Some more Gino facts, most of which haven't been mentioned yet in this thread.
All time leading scorer in AFL history, yes, but that includes leading the league in scoring 5 times.
In combined AFL/NFL history, Gino had 2 of the top 5 scoring seasons of all time: 155 pts during his '64 MVP season and 147 pts in '61.
His Patriots career scoring record stood for 35 years until broken by Vinatieri in 2005. And Gino is still 3rd all time among Pats receivers
While better known as a college QB and pro receiver and kicker, Gino also played defensive back. He was just the second AFL player to intercept 3 passes in one game (against Tom Flores).
Happy with this upgrade to my master set, courtesy of Casey's group sub. I now have the only 2 graded copies of this Glendale Stamp, and this PSA 5 is an upgrade over my 4
As I mentioned in a previous post, it is necessary to leave that sliver of the stamp to the left in order to keep all 4 dashed borders on the back visible.
No problem, Mike, Gino and Blanda are inexorably linked, since they're the top 2 AFL scorers. It's a shame that one is in the HOF and one's not. I'm glad you liked this thread enough to review the whole thing. I really appreciate it.
It's always nice to self submit and get an upgrade especially when you have the only graded copies. Congrats!
In other news, Andre says if you don't make it to the grand opening, he's gonna hunt you down as if you were Ken o'brien. We all know how that will end haha
