My sons first card shop experience...

Today I took my son for his first card shop experience. The owner and the two guys working were awesome and so nice to him. They gave him some Topps Archives packs and I let him pick out a vintage, game used, and 3 packs he wanted. Thanks to grandma and grandpa for making it happen. He picked out a 52 Topps baseball common, a Jay Bruce quad relic from 2014 Museum, and 3 packs...Bowman Baseball and 2 Topps baseball. It was awesome to get home and rip them open in his room and then put them in his book. At 3 he knows who a ton of the stars are. He pulled a Ruth card and a Mantle card (obviously inserts) and was super excited.

I could tell that a couple of the customers were annoyed that he was in there and gave me this look like, "Why did you bring him into our sacred territory?!" He was quiet, polite, and respectful just like we've taught him to be. He had a great time...we both did. He went to bed tonight staring at his 52 Topps card.

They had a big case break tonight. The owner was working on submitting cards for grading (they are an official Beckett drop off site). One was helping a guy with vintage and the other guy was selling wax. It's a pretty busy store to say the least. Especially on Friday's when people get off work.

Nice! Start 'em young. Now you two will always have something in common and special to share.

Yup. Or better yet, if they were trying to wheel and deal, politely tell thim you will give them 20% of what they
are looking for out of their cards. Or they can hold onto them for another 50 years while snubbing young collectors
and take their collection to the grave because there will be nobody around interested in buying that worthless cardboard.

I dont wanna grow up, Im a Toys-R-Us kid!

I love this story! As a father of 2 sons who collect, just...... Wow. I love the image of your 3 year old boy clutching his 52 topps in bed. One of the best things I've ever read on this site. Thanks a billion for sharing with us.

Just the thought of a 3-year-old opening up a pack and getting excited about a Ruth card warms my heart. Thanks.
  • Nice work Guru
My son will be two in October - just made my day thinking we are a year away!
Glad to hear your son is taking to it already. What a great time for him marveling at his new found relic from the past.
Enjoy and keep the stories coming.

That's an awesome story! Good for you taking your son and giving the experience. I have 3 and only one is into cards. These are the times your son will remember when he grows up. Thanks for sharing. 👍👍👍

Great post. Good for you for getting your son into collecting. I bought my son his first box of cards to rip when he was 4. He is 6 now and is always asking to rip packs. My wife and I use packs as rewards from time to time. As for the anybody who looks sideways at your son (or any kid in a card shop) that is their problem. Kids are the future of our hobby.

Very cool to get your son interested in cards at a young age.

Awesome father & son experience, Chris.

It's great to hear your, and other's on this thread, getting your son involved in the hobby.

Card collecting makes for some great father & son moments and I hope it's something the two of you can share together for many, many years to come.

    Thanx for sharing Chris.

I never took pics with Justin browsing in the first shop we went in 1990. I recommend some pics to archive.

The first shop I took him to was The Augusta Coin Shop - I was stationed at Ft Gordon.

I was right there with you!

I did the same thing with my son in '97. It was just another way to spend
time with him. Enjoy the years you have while he's young and wide-eyed.
Mine is now a senior in college and his interests have taken him in a different
direction. I did the same thing towards the end of high school. He still likes
to talk cards so you never know, he may come back to it like I did.

Take him to all the shops and shows that you can now!

I see him getting plenty of cards for his Birthday and Christmas in his future. My wife
hangs about 20 stockings on the stairs every Christmas. He used to love reaching
his hand in and pulling a pack out of each one. Great memories!

You sound like a great Dad! Have fun!

Glad the shop owner was a great guy.

That's awesome...you'll love it as he gets older and can appreciate it the way you do as well...nothing I enjoy more then opening a box of cards with my son. He pulled an expensive autograph from FIFA panini when those first came out along with some cool refractor USA cards. He did pokemon a few years ago but now just likes soccer and appreciates my collection..sharing a hobby with your child is priceless!!!

Mine is 14 and likes them but doesn't collect anything but belly button lint. He is autistic, knows all the MLB and NHL stats and players, but has no interest in anything but looking at the cards once in awhile.

Although I may have screwed up with him and given him too much access to the actual players and stadiums. Since he was about 8 or so he has been on the ice to get game worn jerseys 3 times, and gotten a few more outside the locker rooms in meet and greet situations. anytime we've taken a road trip we've stopped at Minor League Parks and Stadiums and he has always sweet talked someone with the franchise to give him goodies that they may have given out at games and usually ends up with a back of the house stadium tour with locker room access etc., as long as the team isn't there of course. Plus we always have game worns around the house, so i guess he just doesn't feel any need for a card.
