Ditto. McGwire was all the rage in the bay area, since it was his rookie season and he was hitting homers like no other rookie. I remember one dealer who had about 500 85T McGwires in his display case. Rumor had it that he won it from a gambling bet (i.e., instead of betting for money, they bet for cards???).
2001 Cleveland- I'm pretty sure that was the year but certain it was Cleveland.

yep Ill always have fond memories of that first one in Los Angeles...as a 14 year old kid my budget was 20.00....I ended up with one purchase...a 1968 Jerry Koosman RC card. Many years later when a company named PSA came along,I sent it in and it came back a Psa 8! I can remember dealers with dozens of 65 Carlton and 67 Seaver Rookies fanned out. I wish I had picked up a few of those back then.
1989 Chicago. Got there on Sunday about 2pm, they didn't even charge entry. I remember some booths had some hot models and for a 16 year old I liked those booths a lot

Much smaller back then.
Very overwhelming. Over 900 tables! Couldn't keep up with everything going on. No CU, no internet, no "networking."
Today it's way easier to keep track of things.
Hope those at the National are having a good time!
Here are the pictures of what I picked up and what I got to see while I was there.
Picked up these three (the Ruth we received at the PSA luncheon):
Got to see all of this:

Dodgers collection scans | Brett Butler registry | 1978 Dodgers - straight 9s, homie
I left thinking never again... I spent more on travel than I did at the show unfortunately.
But now I am thinking Chicago 2015?
