Good evening everyone
Just picked up a pretty nice 1868 $1 gold piece I would love to get some grade opinions on it because it is not a series I am very familiar with - would someone be kind enough to post photos of it for me if I email them to you? It would be greatly appreciated

<< <i>Thanks for your help posting the photos - what would lead you to believe it is counterfeit ? >>
It's missing a lot of details not due to a weak strike but because it might be cast... The reverse has a granular appearance.
Hair and reverse detail looks weak, color not quite right.

<< <i>Yup. Fake. 1868 is a "red flag" date for gold dollars.....probably a Lebanese fake. >>
Poor fakes, good kebabs

<< <i>I appreciate you guys taking the time to explain these things to me - I was under the impression it was honest wear >>
The rub and surface marks may actually be intentional to make them look more authentic.
<< <i>You live and learn - this is the exact reason I joined these forums- thanks all for your help - thankfully I have recourse with the seller >>
Your not alone as I'm sure if you glance at the completed sales on EBay there's plenty being sold regularly along with California fractional gold another dinky diameter series which is heavily counterfeited.
