John McCloskey and a rare 1837 Quarter Eagle die variety

CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,711 ✭✭✭✭✭
Does anybody on here remember a thread about a rare die variety on an 1837 quarter eagle that was in an auction somewhere (eBay?) that John McCloskey was trying to buy? The coin had graffiti on it, the initials E.A.G. engraved in the field above the eagle.

I have tried the advanced search on here, but cannot find it. Perhaps it was elsewhere.

The coin is mentioned in the new Coin World Online (now on Saturdays) as coming up for sale.

The coin is lot # 11045 in "The Dr. James A. Ferrendelli Collection" sale by Stack's Bowers. The sale is scheduled for August 6.

I remember stating somewhere that I suspected that the initials might represent "Elizabeth Anna Gobrecht," but I cannot find the reference I used anywhere.

i see. i made the presumption you were talking about a BS because of the graffiti, not the 3rd marriage as a proof.

It was previously in Heritage's 2006 FUN sale, lot 4707. I'll let someone else generate the link.

If you find any reference, would be most interested if you would share. The implication is that there may be something of importance to the striking of these coins.

It seems that there may be something more given the fact that this die pair is the only two pale gule striking of a $ 2 1/2 CHG. Perhaps it was a trial run. And a trial run that failed, as the obverse die shattered and the strikings were abysmal.

Other than the fact that this die pair was double struck, I'm not aware of any other evidence that would lead to the conclusion that these coins are all "proofs". Maybe somebody has come across some archival evidence. I look forward to examining this coin at the ANA.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

Interesting that under enlargement of the photo, the top serif of the "E" is faintly traced out, but was never engraved.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
