my run of FB unopened bbce boxes considering auction...advice needed

So as some of you know I have an absolutely pristine run of bbce wrapped non X out Topps Football from 72 to 89, except for 73. The 75 is sealed from case cello and the 76 is cello...all the others are perfect wax boxes and the 74 even has the original topps flyer etc...just gorgeous all the way around.

The focus of my collection is starting to move stronger in other directions, so that's why I'm thinking it's time to part ways.

Highly considering selling the entire lot on REA...also potentially box by box on ebay, or touching base with previous people that gave me offers.

What do you all think is my best bang for the buck? besides a forum rip fest of course, haha.

This is a tough call. I would probably lean towards an auction house like REA or JustCollect depending on what type of commission they charge you. You could list it on eBay with a high BIN and solicit best offers which will give you an idea of the current market value while linking it to the B/S/T forum to enable guys to work out deals off eBay. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Even though I don't collect unopened football, I have a soft spot for the 1976 set. Always loved that big *ss football. image

Do you know what prices you would be happy with for each box? If you do, I think I would try the BST forum first. I know there are some unopened football collectors on here that would be interested. I need two boxes to complete my 80's run. Listing the boxes here would save 10-15% in fees. You may be able to get more money for the 70's boxes by going through an auction house but the extra might be eaten up in fees and the cost of you shipping the boxes to the auction house.

High class problem for some pretty high demand items so I think either way should work well. I'd go auction with them though to maximize your exposure.

I agree with the auction house idea to maximize exposure. Look at what happened when a group of boxes and cases surfaced in one auction. There was so much exposure that even the guys on here grouped together to try to win some of the auctions.

Any chance you could land a 73 box before you sell it?

I bet the premium for having ALL would be more than the cost of the box. You could probably add 90-92 (for a full 30 year run) for under $50.

REA, Memory Lane and Heritage have pretty good track records. I'd lean REA and I think they will work with you.

I agree. If you aren't sure what it's worth to sell it direct to someone, I was very happy with BBCE's consignment process. Fair commission and everyone checks out their auctions when they are looking to buy unopened.

Another vote for BBCE.......... even though the boxes are BBCE wrapped I think a lot of buyers are more comfortable buying from BBCE (eliminates the possibility of The box/ BBCE wrap having been tampered with).

Definitely the way to go if you plan on using eBay.

As James stated, if you have a price in mind then rather than rolling the dice with an auction format, I think there is a lot of upside to selling on the B/S/T forum here.

No fees, many buyers are likely to be receptive to paying via gift or covering the Paypal fees, and you have a pool of reliable buyers who aren't likely to do a return or chargeback.

Whatever route you decide on, good luck with the sales... but I don't think you'll need it. image

By the way, what are you focusing on these days that has you abandoning your unopened run?

Again, appreciate all the advice and feedback...I've got a strong game plan for highest dollars in my opinion, so thanks. Snorto, I've been most interested in vintage baseball, specifically high end cenetered psa rc's...they display amazing, investment high, and can keep upgrading...I also LOVE modern hof on card auto cards...the topps tier one from 2013 with the white back and blue ink cards are beautiful...almost finished that set...the money and profit from the football boxes will go towards hmmm, maybe a nice Koufax rookie..wow.

Had second thoughts so holding off for now - it just displays so nice and took a long time to find the most pristine of boxes...if I don't sell, my wife suggested I get 1990-2014 and find the 73..since I was born in 70 I suppose I could also try for a 70 and 71. I'm so fickle.

Good on you! You're right, it would be difficult to put the run back together with clean boxes, some of those 70's boxes just don't show up too often.

I've done the same thing as far as collecting boxes up to the present day, but only going back to 1976. It's interesting to see how the packaging, prices, and box player selection evolved over an almost 40 year period.

Glad to see you decided to hold on to them as some would be much harder to find than the cards you were thinking about trading them in for.

Good point...it'll take me longer to get some of the guys I'm looking for, but I'm resubmitting 4 high end cards for potential bumps this week and if any of them come in, they might be good candidates for taking profits. Snorto, do you collect just one sport, which one? do you have your boxes displayed? Would love to see..it is cool to see the progression, agreed. I bought 2 boxes of 1985 football from Steve about a year ago and the boxes were perfect...I opened one not to long ago and did very well...doing a sub from those soon...on a seperate note, I did open the rest of my 75 mini packs and got some real nice centered and sharp cards...6 in total...I am subbing those this week...I'll update the other link with my results when they come in.

Oh, it all started out innocently enough around this time last year... putting together a run of 1981-1988 Topps Football wax boxes, the same that I collected in my youth.

From there it became a wax/foil box run from 1976 - current. Plus cello boxes from 1980-1989, but I just picked up a 1978, so who knows.

Then I wanted one example from the various formats available 1976 - 1989 such as wax trays, wax pack racks, racks, grocery racks, etc..

Then for those formats that have players showing, I wanted to pick them up with Walter Payton's various cards showing.

Then, what the heck, I put together a run of 1980-1989 Topps, Donruss, Fleer, and Upper Deck baseball boxes (the only baseball in my formerly just football collection) since I did collect baseball as a kid too.

Anything older than 1976, I am just looking for a graded wax + cello pack... boxes are just too expensive for my level of interest in them.

As far as displaying them, I haven't even thought about that. The higher end boxes are in my home safe and are likely to stay there. The 1980 and up boxes are just displayed in a bookcase currently. Most of them stacked, with my favorites stood on end to display better. As much as I dig cards, I also have a lot of memorabilia since it displays so much easier, nicely than cards... but space is quickly becoming limited. image

    Snorto~

P.S. I love 1985 Topps Football... I bought a few boxes to open and put together a raw, strong mint set. But as prices escalated so quickly, I abandoned that idea and switched to 1988 as my rip project, as well as some newer 90's boxes I keep around to ravage as the urge strikes.
