Opinions please...whats a reasonable finders fee? Thx

Hey guys,

In a completely different hobby/collectors universe that were getting involved in, we were looking for a particular item. It's value is about $1500. Not all that rare. Probably could have found one on my own within a month but wanted it soon. So I offered a finders fee on their message board. Super nice guy gave me a referral that ended up with a completed deal with a very well known dealer in that hobby. In fact, 2-3 days after the referral, others contacted me with a direct sale/offer. I mention that because of the rarity.

Anyways...what's a reasonable finders fee to paypal him? Hes a great guy so want to give him something. Any similar experiences?

Thx

I'm sure he probably isn't expecting anything, but something in the $50 range might be nice for something that is $1500. I've received a couple things like that, one was a gift certificate to a local restaurant (ordered online), for some uniform research I did, the other was an offer here for $20 to find one card a guy needed for a set. It was an easy find, but worth it to the buyer.

I would go with $$ though as opposed to a gift certificate as cash can always be used.

    $50 seems more than fair.

Since you say he's a nice guy, another idea is to purchase an item that you know he will like to add to his collection (if it falls in the same price range).
  • That's a great idea. A little more personal than just cash.

A guy at work says the fee should be based more on difficulty of obtaining the item vs the value. I guess he's equating it to say....I'm looking for a 1972 unopened box....which has been on eBay for $15000 forever. And easily found/located. So wouldn't 5% ($750) would seem high?

I'm leaning towards the higher amount just because he seems like a really nice guy. Tho I like the personal gift tho I don't want to come across as a stalker.

Good ol google...thx...FYI. Says about 2.5 - 5%. I think between $50-$75 is pretty fair. Should make him happy. Or $75 worth of what he likes would be cool. I wonder what he's thinking. Of course he said it wasn't necessary when I asked for his paypal info.

I'd do $50 if cash or a $75 item that he might like. The item would be cool because as you say, it's more personalized than cash and it takes more effort and thought.
  • Great advice here.

If he's a great guy, he's probably not expecting much of anything. I'd find out what he likes to drink and send him a bottle of it.
  • On a $1500 item i'd probably give $100 but that's likely high. But I tip the pizza delivery guy and waiters well also image

    +1
It sounds as if you want to be generous so why not round it off to 1 bill. If there is a next time he'll go to great lengths
    to find what you need.

That depends upon where he lives. If he's from West Virginia, that would be totally acceptable image
