1921 Caramel "George Ruth" Card Found - Looking for Info

Found this baby in my closet after many years. Am planning on shipping it from the east coast to PSA to get graded and then probably keeping. Anyone have any reason/tips I should not do this? Should I ship USPS or FedEx with insurance? Or would it be worth it to drive it to SGC in New Jersey which is much closer to me? It is in good enough condition for it getting graded to not reduce the value at all, correct? Just never dealt with anything like this before. And it is the 1921 American Caramel George Ruth that only has a POP 5, correct? Just making sure I'm not missing anything.

Thanks for the help guys!

Wow, great first post!! Welcome to the boards, though can't help you on the card.

I'd say you're looking at a 1 either way as it looks like there is some creasing through the middle. Shipping would be the same either way via priority as west coast is moved via air so the only thing different is distance traveled. It's really preference on what holder you think it would look prettier in at this point. I think it would draw the same money either way personally

I think those white lines are found on each example of that card, if that's what you're talking about.

I would use the highest psa grading and quick turnaround
  • This is an E121 Ruth Throwing "George" Variation.

This will grade a 3 or 4 and is worth between $6000 and $10000

Card must be graded prior to sale.

USPS overnight /w insurance should run you roughly $60-$80. Grading should run you (depending on tier) $250-$500.

Great card- Ruth in a pitching pose. Did you notice he is wearing a Boston uniform? Pretty Cool I collect
1921 koester bread cards which are blank back and spotlight the first subway series in NY . The Ruth card looks just like yours...George Ruth on front but blank on back. They are also on a thicker card stock then the w 575s

  • Yes, not creases, just a very fine printing error that may be on all the cards, not sure. I was predicting a 3 or 4. And the PSA declared value under $10,000 is $150, which is the service I was planning on using.

...that being the case I would without question send it to PSA as I think it would draw a considerable premium in a 3 to 4 as I would agree it would yield. Would love to hear the results too!

Are these less or more expensive than the caramel cards? I have the 1921 caramel Ruth in my checklist to use as his rookie card since anything earlier is not in my price range.. Quite frankly the caramel isn't in my price range either.. But atleast its in the ballpark.
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here

Koesters bread is more scarce and fetches more $ .

This is a great card. However, many Ruth cards including 1921 American Caramel's are reprinted and counterfeited incessantly. Therefore, you must get it graded at some point. I think either SGC or PSA would be fine, just whatever you are comfortable with. PSA might bring slightly more $$$, but may not be worth the concern of having to ship it across country. If you are going to National, you could always do onsite grading for PSA then also.

BTW, from what I've heard, it's very difficult to tell the difference between Koesters Bread and W575-1 blank back. (Some say the paper stock is slightly different.) Therefore, 1921 E121 American Caramel's typically sell for higher prices.

A beautiful whale of a card!!!
Tallulah Bankhead — 'There have been only two geniuses in the world. Willie Mays and Willie Shakespeare.'
  • Not counterfeit, thanks for the input though. Was handed down from my father along with about 20-30 other Caramels including a Hornsby and Walter Johnson.

E 121 fetch more then W575s but Koesters are the rarest and fetch the most Itis hard telling the difference sometimes between a 575 and a koester card , but after handling a few it is easy. Also certain players only appear in the koester set and those cards can be used for comparison purpose to understand the difference in paper stock thickness.

Also the Koesters card had an album to glue the cards into which makes them a little harder to find without back damage I have never seen the album but I have seen more cards with back damage then clean backs. Has any seen the koester album ? If so please post a picture.

Fantastic! Is this a card you realized you had all along or did you recently re-discover it? I would definitely send it to PSA to authenticate, and hold it until you get your price. I would love to hear the outcome, as I am sure most here would.
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !

Knew I had it but did not know anything about the value or the rarity (out of the 5 Ruth Caramel variations) until recently.

That's an awesome card. Ruth in a Sox uni pitching? That's about as good as a baseball card gets!

Let's not get carried away here

I have it on good authority that this card will one day be worth 50 large

Nice card!! It's posts like this that make me want to re-check my collection for "hidden gems". But I'll probably just find more Todd Van Poppel RC's

Unfortunately, the Koesters Ruth isn't one of those players that is unique to the set, and I haven't handled the ones that are. I haven't seen an album, but an uncut sheet did sell a couple years ago: Link

Do you happen to have a '21 Caramel Sewell or Pennock?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
