Gambled w/some crackouts... and won! Grades back from our host, and I'm doin' a happy dance! (UPDAT

Man, I'm psyched. I took a chance and cracked some ICG and NGC material from my Box of 20 and sent them to PCGS.

The results exceeded my expectations considerably.

image

Better yet, the bigger wins came on the "better" coins, for the most part, and the only coin that didn't grade was a cheap bulk bag cherrypick which had cost me maybe ten cents, so it's no disappointment- I'll make money on it regardless. The rest are going back into the Box of 20.

I went out on a limb here, and was a little nervous on a few of these, but the risk paid off.

As of this posting, the TrueViews aren't showing up yet (but all the above will have them).

In the meantime, here are the "before" pictures.

They're ALL TrueViewed, which was a big reason I cracked most of them. I was happy enough with the existing plastic grades, but wanted better pictures (and PCGS plastic is nice to have anyway).

Can't wait to see the TrueViews, but apparently the grades just posted so the cert number links aren't working yet. I expect I should be able to see those in the next day or so?

Cool. Maybe I'll have TrueViews to share tomorrow night.

I'm anticipating them almost as much as I did the grades, now.

As to the dancing video, it's really too bad the old Open Forum went away. I once had a "Go Ahead- Photoshop Me" thread, where people took my Holey Coin Hat avatar picture and Photoshopped it into all sorts of things. That thread was really a hoot.

One of the animated gifs was a remake of that "dancing guy" gif, which somebody stuck my head on. The image is probably still out there in cyberspace- all those pix were in a Photobucket album somebody made- but I can't find 'em now, and the Open Forum is long gone.

I guess this one will just have to do.

    .

when waiting on pcgs images, you don't always have to wait. get your cert #s, put them in one of the following links, and see what you can turn up. sure it doesn't hurt to wait a couple/few days either.

1 ore from that time period seem to be notorious for cleaning, at least from my experience.

you can get some more pcgs image info from this thread. the info is about in the middle of the thread. right now it is pseudo dumping ground for info that i need to clean up.

    Lance- thanks! You rock! image

Now, about that creepy-lookin' avatar of yours... image

PS- hmm... those are prolly the PCGS Secure pix rather than the TrueViews, I guess? Or is it the same diff?

Love how the Aethelred penny came out.

Not so enamored of how the Venetian grosso and a few others came out, but eh, they're still way better pix than I could produce myself.

PS- on second thought, I think the Venetian TrueView pix are accurate to the coin's in-hand appearance. Original pix might have been juiced slightly. Or, more likely, just lit differently.

LM, I think you did right to crack out for the obvious reason as well (and I would bet money on this that can not now be proven). My experience is that when coins are submitted in "foreign" slabs like NGC or ICG that hosts have a certain bit of, well, snobbiness and hit the grade down a bit. I did the same with two farthings not long ago that I knew were proof and graded on the low side in MS by NGC, cracked them out and they came back as IMO correctly graded by hosts at Proof 64 brown and Proof 65 RB.

Anyway, congratulations on some nice results there.

For the official TrueView of the gilt 1/2d I liked the cameo and the some of the subdued luster:

But still I took a shot of the fields as well:

The TrueView emails should go out once the coins are shipped.

By the way the your TrueView email, TrueView cert page, and TrueView info page will be altered/updated in the coming weeks.

Congrats. You caught the boys at PCGS, at the right time and place, in a very giving and good mood! The ex-NGC 1806 had to be the biggest surprise. Nice results, dude. You give anyone who considers "crack-outs" a big boost in confidence. Good job and good for you.-joeyimage

Hey, Phil. Thanks for the alt TrueView. I think it is a good supplement to the official one. But I agree that the official one should be the primary, since it shows the contrast.

Your work was, as I have mentioned, my prime impetus behind the cracking and conversion of these.

    Very nice.

I especially like the Aethelred II. Looks like the reverse text is +EA/DPOL/D M'O CENT, which would be Canterbury Mint, and Eadweald or Eadwold as moneyer. He must have traveled a bit, as my S-1151 is also Eadweald, but from the London Mint.

PCGS seems to accept peck marks on these early Anglo-Saxon coins a little more than other TPGs, which interpret them as damage or wear.
