Unfortunately autos usually pop after an athletes death. When the news hits you may see double the listings at double the price soon after. Novice buyers unaware of the past market think the autos are a bargain and pop on them. As a seller of autos I refuse to take advantage of the situation, the prices usually settle to more normal levels in a few weeks anyway, although will be forever elevated due to the fact the athlete will never sign again.

Look at the bidding history. It doesn't look legit.

Sometimes it takes a players death to bring out some cool items that have not been seen in a while. I don't really see any issues with listing something at the "right time", such as right after a death. That is just taking advantage of a time when people are remembering, mourning, etc and will certainly maximize your profits typically. If you start something out at a reasonable price and not inflated to begin with, you are simply letting the market decide the price. I do hate to see those listing things well above what they have sold for in the past after a death though. Those items may reach the opening price anyway, but those sellers just seem like they are out to gouge. I don't sell, so this is just an opinion.

I've been trying to land a reasonably priced Panini dual auto book of Garvey/Gwynn numbered to 25. I was able to get a couple of the #'d/15 book, but for some reason the 25 version kept selling for more than I felt it was worth. Then one listed at 99 cents (days before Gwynn passed coincidentally) and was going to be my best shot, but timing is everything and it ended at $81. That is actually a pretty good price considering.
I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.
  • the 1998 retro gwynn auto sold 2 days ago for $200 and in may of this year $25.00 and gwynns auto is not rare at all. the card is limited to 200 copies but no way its worth even $500.00 and the one at $3k is not going to be worth $300 in couple months

    Will it be paid for?
  • I can understand on card auto going for more. Because U know Donruss/Panini & Upper Deck will buy them and cut them & make 1 of 1 insert. Topps use sticker auto so other card companies won't buy them & make them into their products. I would rather have auto that is not cut & pay little extra to get the whole card.
Beside his signature, Gwynn 1983 Topps raw is bidding very high too. HOLY COW RAW selling as high as PSA 7
