Amazing unopened collection sold few years back

Came accross the link to this amazing auction last night. Cannot remember when it was--10 years ago??--but it remains one of the most amazing unopened collections ever sold. Rates up there with Larry Solomon's--good ol jerseyfive.

I won several items but cannot even remember which ones. Never found out who owned the collection. Anyone know?

It was sold thru Alan Rosen--and if. I recall correctly it consisted of a complete run of packs from all 4 sports-wax and cello--from every year 1952-1980 or so

Wow!!

I remember that auction well, although I thought it was simply a photo hosting of your spare packs, Manny, LOL..

Looking through that auction, I have a question~as far as I know, the 1973 Topps "All Series" wax packs featured the red triangle stating as such on the left side of the wrapper, yet one of the 73 packs listed as an all series pack has just the standard 73 wrapper variation. I'm assuming GAI goofed when labeling that pack, unless someone here knows about all series packs in 73 being produced with no designation as such?

I was going through some of my OPC baseball packs and have several that are labeled as coming from that auction on the back of the flip. I thought that was pretty cool. I wish I were collecting back then.
Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

Ken Meyer sends that link out every week it seems!
The auction was thru EAC galleries, still have the catalog. It was run really badly and a lot of bids didn't even take properly, so it should've gone much higher. Larry S. bought a few packs from there, including his '58 nickel that I ended up with eventually.
I bought about 6 packs, had the auction been run by REA or someone like that I would've had 6 more. Wasn't a complete run but pretty close.

All series packs definitely had the red triangle on the left side and were not made
any other way. It was a trial marketing effort that was dependent on making it
clear that Topps wanted to change its long-standing practice of issuing by series.

The all series packs are pretty scarce, as they were produced late in the season and
in limited quantity. Probably about 4-5% of the unopened 1973 packs that remain are
    of the all series variety.

Anyone know if they posted back scans too? Would love to get a back scan of that '64 OPC pack with Topps cards in it.

Ken Meyer. A passionate unopened collector.

He must be a member here--who?

Also who owned the collection? Anyone know?
  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
Ken is not a member here, I've tried many times but he's happier sending out emails.
No idea who owned this collection, but I suspect if he sold it to Rosen it was an old time collector that had long been out of the organized hobby, otherwise he wouldn't have left so much on the table and consigned it to an auction house.

Ken Meyer ... a BLAST from the past!

Have not received an email from him in a LONG time.

Dave, I"ll put you on his list if you want. He loves to answer questions and is retired, so he's got plenty of time to chat.

Doug, he's still sending them out on a regular basis. Probably many of the same emails.

Anthony ... how old is Ken?

Although many thought he was a PITA, I did enjoy getting MOST of his emails. He really knew his unopened and I actually learned quite a bit from him. Used to get his emails back in the day when we were all in the WAX PACK forum on eBay.

yeah, that forum was ahead of its time. Pity that it went away purely thru lack of activity.
Ken retired a couple of years ago, I"ve never met him in person but spoken to him and his wife on the phone a dozen times when working out deals. I'm guessing he's early 60's.
I know a few auction houses and dealers that don't care for him, when he sees a fake he is relentless in trying to get them to pull the lot. Some will, one house in particular doesn't care.

I called Ken the "Marshall"--he was that passionate about packs and getting fakes out of the marketplace.

he has pictures of hundreds if not thousands of packs that have been sold over the years. When he spots what he thinks is a fake--he lets everyone know. He has been banned from bidding in many AHs because he is relentless if they are selling something he deems to be bogus. I no longer get his emails since I changed my email addy--but many of his emails were duplicitous and came just about every day. From the Chicago area I do believe--

Anthony--I agree--I was puzzled why EAC auctioned the packs--definitely left some cash on the table as it was run poorly

    Which auction house doesn't care?

Has anyone who asked to be added to ken's email list received any emails from him yet?? Since others who were already on his list gave the impression that he sends out emails on a weekly basis and its been two weeks since we requested to be put on the list I figured I wouldve received an email by now....

The bulk of that collection was owned by a guy named Bill Volmer!

He purchased many of his packs from Mark Murphy, Big Hands Tony (in Alaska), Skip Mathews, Steve Glaze and Paul Wright. The pack collection was amazing!! There were some concerns about several that were resealed, but at the time, no one was authenticating packs. Sadly, even now, it's more a guessing game than anything telling the good from the bad. There are so many bad packs mixed in with good it's a crap shoot nowadays ~ even for the so-called 'experts' . . . still, it's fun to see such an incredible array of vintage unopened in one auction.
