Bosox1976's Set "Rips" Thread - Just got in a nicer 1976 topps set

Since the price of wax rips keep on moving further and further out of the range of realistic ROI, I have been buying up clean looking raw sets on ebay to get my fix. I've been pretty selective, and don't mind paying strong, but I'd say I lose more than I win when setting snipes. I've won some and lost some for sure, but can usually get out of a set almost what I pay when it turns up empty - unlike wax rips.

Anyhow, bought this set on ebay - quite a few nice cards. I'd say it was a vending set, maybe from towards the end of a case (judging by the centering). Some still curled, but no wax in sight and nice gold and black backs. I was very happy with this set vs. spending a similar amount for a couple of 73 packs.

Here were the highlights:

Nice looking set Mike! I envision a few low pop PSA 9s from that set. We've probably clashed in the past on high grade '73 sets. Arguably the best purchase I ever made on eBay is a 1973 set in 1999 for $700. It produced a PSA 9 Schmidt, Ryan, Mays, Gossage, F Robby, B Robby, Rose, Aaron, Stargell, Seaver, Jackson, Garvey and several very low pop commons.

Those are some good looking 73s.

I built a raw set of 73. Not nearly as good looking as these.

I did something similar when I was upgrading my raw 1973 Topps set a few years back. I found it to be a fun exercise and it keeps me from ripping anything. image

Wow, great looking set. I have looked on Ebay for sets but maybe I just dont have the patience to find something this nice.

So the 1973 Topps set was the first year I collected as a kid and have been slowly putting a set together but I am not very far along right now. I have toyed with the idea of just buying a nice set and upgrading where needed. I am curious.......what can I expect to pay for a nice set...with or without the Schmidt at shows or even online?
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

Thanks again guys, I think many of these will probably be heading west to PSA soon.

<< <i>what can I expect to pay for a nice set...with or without the Schmidt at shows or even online? >>

I think you can get a great start with a set in the $450-$700 range. This one was about $500, but the Schmidt wasn't centered too well. Near/partial sets are usually a good bang for your buck too.

The last high grade set I bought was $1050. It was more than I wanted to pay but it was a pretty strong set, original owner. I got a PSA 9 Clemente and a few lower pop high numbers plus several 8s so I probably came out a little ahead on it. I'd agree with your assessment that NM-NM/MT sets will go for that range with mostly NM sets selling for the lower end of the range and mostly NM-MT sets selling at the top end of that range.

I am guessing centering on all but the team cards, and I must have missed a corner on Fergie Jenkins. Not the monster set that John bought and described on page one of this thread, but still very happy with the grades.

Not bad Mike. Do you think they're grading ultra tough these days? I've been hit pretty hard over the past few years.

<< <i>Not bad Mike. Do you think they're grading ultra tough these days? I've been hit pretty hard over the past few years. >>

Personally, I have been fortunate the past few years. I've had only two "minus one" poppages - my name for a sub wherein most cards are a grade lower than one would normally expect - and therefore a disaster. That said, I find myself cracking and resubbing about 10%. Also, I can count my .5's on little more than one hand. Finally, I have had some pleasant surprises sprinkled into my subs - pennies from heaven.

For those that play blackjack, you know how when playing all weekend it really only comes down to how you do on your splits and double-downs? I feel like those pleasant grading surprises have been like winning those splits and double-downs - hence, I feel fortunate. If ten or twenty cards had come in a grade lower, over the past couple of years, I'd probably be feeling the same as you, amigo.

    edit: some more poppage

Hands down the sharpest '73's I've seen in a while! How on earth did the Mays, not to mention a few others, not get a nine! Again no halfsies. Maybe they want to see those cards again. LOL Orlando Cepeda on the A's! Didn't he play about 5 games for them?

Got in two 1975 Topps sets this week -- the first was a fairly priced set -- not much gradeable, but came with a PSA 8 Brett. Only Rose and Stargell are going in from this whole set. Paid a little over $415 delivered, so not too bad with the Brett.

Got in another 75 set today, and it is much fresher. Paid $675 delivered, and looks like much more to grade in this set.

First up, some of the nicer and tougher commons....
