Anyone know anything about this 10 oz silver round?

The dinged up non-circular (maybe it once was before people decided to play hockey with it) 10 oz round apparently is a Montana Eagle from the Whitley Mint and I'm guessing was made in 1983. Beyond that, anyone know anything more about it? I cam up mostly empty googling it. Thanks in advance.

    Never seen it.

Me either, that's why I took a chance on it for the heck of it. The edges are higher than the designed part of the bar on both sides. For not being terribly old (1983) I wonder why it's in such rough shape.

This silver round was minted at a small mint operated by Harold Whitley in Darby, Montana in 1983. As near as we can tell these rounds did not travel much beyond the state borders. Certainly until we purchased this roll we had never even seen one before.

Ironically Mr Whitley received a trademark for the name "American Eagle" in 1981, 5 years before the US Mint started producing theirs. It is unknown if they had to pay any royalties as the trademark status shows that the the trademark was abandoned in 1983.

Rounds have an outline of the state of Montana with ".999+ Fine Silver" inside, and Whitley Mint, 1983 on the obverse, the reverse bears an eagle over the state with "Montana Eagle" inscribed.

Rounds are in very good uncirculated condition, with minor tarnishing and marks.

    Limited quantities.
