2 day Priority Mail just a waste of money

bestdaybestday Posts: 4,242 ✭✭✭✭
Just seems the mail delivery is only going downhill.. only about 40 % of 2 day Priority packages arrive within 2 days ..some come 3 days others 3-4 days.. This is even though P.O sits between 2 large Post Office processing areas 5 miles apart
how are others faring ?

I ABSOLUTELY have no complaints with the Post Office Overall! I think they are going overboard trying to improve their image and service. Have I lost any packages? Yes...1 out of Way over a thousand in the last year. I don't think their service can be bested IMHO!

Priority is just estimated delivery, not guaranteed. It doesn't even go by air unless it's more than about 600 miles. A lot of it is timing. I've dropped stuff at my closed P.O. after 5 pm on Saturday and had it delivered on Monday. Usually it's fastest [2-3 days] to either coast if mailed on Fri. or Sat.

As Tom says above, it is an estimate. It should be taken as such.
If you want a guarantee, use the Express and pay for that. If it isn't there when they say it will be, you get a refund.

Or, use UPS/FedEx. Good luck with any insurance or other issues, but they are there to be used if you want.

I, myself, 100% prefer the USPS for both ends of the transaction.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

If your package is 13 oz or less, First Class is a much better value. Gets there just as fast, too.

I recently had a USPS registered package go from my very small PO to another small PO more than 1000 miles away in less than 48 hours. Going the other direction it took 72 hours.

Very nice, compared to what I was seeing a couple of years ago. YMMV.

which is my point ....if post office can't deliver they sell and what I you pay for.... maybe 1st class is better and just as fast at less cost

Priority mail is just a higher priced first class. Priority just starts at a certain weight is all. It is advantageous when you can use the flat rate packaging. It's always best to carefully assess what you're sending and decide which service gives the most/best bang for the buck.

None are guaranteed in 2 days! Go ahead and use UPS or Fed-Ex who don't insure coins and see how you do! I know there are some crappy Post Offices...but most are not and mine is excellent!

You neglect to entertain the part of Priority Mail being just an estimate, so you really have no point yet. The USPS has never guaranteed a particular day for PM, only Express Mail as already mentioned. As others have said, if you do not like the service, then you are free to go elsewhere. The USPS has never failed me during my entire life of using them. One misplaced package showed up 3 weeks later. One so-called empty package was paid out by the USPS. That's it in 37 years. Not a bad track record. I bet the other services cannot say the same.

No matter where I send something, if I send it Saturday, it is always there Monday. (As stated above.) I think that is amazing, and I sometimes wonder who's running the place on the weekends. Are they using contract workers on the weekends? Grade school kids? Something is working.

Priority Registered mail is safe, but absolutely no guarantee of even five day delivery. Quite often, I get delivery three days after the web site says I should expect delivery. Sometimes my packages are delivered late, and the web site, the same day, still says expected delivery three days ago. Sad way to run a business.

I have very few complaints with the usps. I did just have a priority package take more than a week to go about 100 miles. Those worry me a bit.

Generally happy with two day priority service.........but..........recent priority envelope from TN to NJ took 9 days. Felt I paid a bit too much for that particular package. I'll be watching for
a deterioration of their service. Hope we are not going in that direction.

That's my preferred day of shipping.....Saturday.
It's always there on Monday bright and early.

MD to CA in 2 days for both Priority and First class mail. However, mail going to FL & TX from MD take 3 days. Just last week I had a Priority (small flat rate box) Mail delivered to HI in 2 days...unbelievable... In addition, their tracking has vastly improved in the last year. My hat's off...keep up the good work.

I've had no problems with it. With that said, it very well could be your local post office. A friend who is very OC and always pays his bills on time began to get calls from his
bank that the mortgage was always late on his new house. It never happened at his old house and he used the same bank. He finally figured out it was his post office that
was not getting the mail out when he started using mail boxes in other towns and never had another problem. He confronted the postmaster and of course nothing is their fault.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Priority is awesome. 2-3 days max! Registered. Well that's a whole different beast. I can ride faster by bike. I live in NH and CAC is in NJ. When I send them coins Priority they get it next day, sometimes the second day. By contrast they sent me my coins back registered on Friday, it's Wednesday and I still don't have them. It takes usually 5-7 days from NJ. When I used to send registered to PCGS...a week minimum, sometimes longer.

USPS priority is probably the best deal going bar none.

Well if you do not like their service take it over to FEDEX or UPS..Dang, I keep forgetting THEY HAVE THE USPS CONTRACT for overnight, priority, etc. service.

I'm in Mass, and I have had nothing but good luck with Priority. Only once has it taken more than 3 days, and that took 4 days. Our hosts have sometimes gotten my coins in 2 days, and I usually never ship on Friday, and I'm usually racked out Sat from Friday night, so can't make the noon bell for a Sat P.O. drop off.

edited...mercurydimeguy, I notice ALL my mail gets routed to Nashua first, then off to it's destination. Perhaps that's why you have such good luck.
    I'll come up with something.

I've had excellent results shipping USPS Priority Mail for the last 16 years, and so far, knock on wood, I've never had a package lost or damaged. I don't often ship coins, but I do ship very small, very high value items regularly. One thing to keep in mind is that on a small light weight item over a certain value, it is sometimes cheaper to ship Priority Mail Express because the insurance is so much cheaper. If it's small & expensive, check out the charges both ways. The customers really appreciate the next day delivery! I don't tell them it was less expensive.

how about this analogy... you buy a coin for price on ebay at a grade listed./... . seller sends a poor quality coin not the one promised.. the seller says if you don't like the coin .. then pay more .. you will get a better coin and be happy..image

Nothing in life is guaranteed other than death.

Delivery times are reference points, that's all.

It is frustrating when you want to get something you bought, and paid for, but it takes an extra couple days because of shipping, but come on, really? In the internet world this would qualify for a post to #FirstWorldProblems.

Oh no!!! My coins didn't come today. Call the police!!! I've been wronged!!

Ok I'm joking around, obviously, but seriously Priorty Mail is still the best price/service combination available.
  • GotTheBugGotTheBug Posts: 1,717 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's not necessarily a waste - you get $50 worth of insurance and tracking with it nowadays. Used to be you paid extra for that.

I have no complaints whatsoever with the USPS. I've never had a package lost or stolen, never had contents come up missing, etc.

It often takes an extra day to remote areas, but my stuff gets there in 2 days well over 90% of the time.
I guess I'm too busy with work to worry about an extra day here or there. And it's not a waste of money
(for stuff over 13 ounces) when you consider there aren't really any cheaper alternatives for that class
    of service.

You can put 70lbs of crap in a medium or lg flat rate box…an unbeatable value…

which makes up for any deficiencies in delivery time in my world.

    had one due Saturday.
It showed en route in the am from a central PO
    then nothing.
    No Sat. delivery, no scan.
    Then the holiday.
It finally scanned in as arrived at the PO on Tues. -- a mail day late and no explanation why it took over the holiday to travel 40 miles.

As stated earlier, the delivery dates for priority mail are estimated not guaranteed. Express mail does offer a guaranteed delivery date and time or your money back.

Just sent a USPS Priority (small flat rate box) package to PCGS on Tuesday June 3 (mail picked up at my house in New Hampshire around 11:30 AM), it arrived and got logged into PCGS on Thursday June 5. You really cannot ask nor imagine a better deal/service than that for $5.20 plus insurance...

Put a flat rate envelope in my mailbox [Ames, IA] on June 4. Picked up by my carrier and taken to PO about 4 pm. Delivered in Windham, ME today. Pretty darn good for a non essential shipment.
