How could a "collector" do this to a well struck 1839 Reeded Edge Capped Bust Half Dollar?

This short series is one of my favorites, and I know TomB has a place in his heart for this coin.

The coin underneath this tarnish appears to be a real beauty.

As I post this thread, I wonder why so many people are bidding on it.

At least the seller with a feedback of '4' is honest in his item description: “beautiful shape, no wear, though tarnished”

    A shame.

I wouldn't say "tarnished" is a good or honest description. "Cooked", maybe.

The obverse has other issues that would make me pass even if it weren't badly doctored.

    No.
    That's subjective.

Looks like a polished coin some old Whitman folder toning...

Details are choice AU, but I'd rather have an original VF than this coin.

Some big bidders on this coin and a collector did not do anything to the coin a seller did

Too bad for the coin. It deserved better care.

Of course it can be reported. However, they won't do anything about it.

Classics have to be left alone to be classy. Anything less is just not as classy, but it's still a classic.
How could someone clean it, or "dip" it, or even spend it, in the first place ? No, not how. Why ? Oh never mind. This question may never be answered to appease the disdain some carry for their ruination.
