NEWP....how do you determine value on these?

Just picked this off ebay for $50. Thought it was cool and was the only bidder. Perhaps I overpaid,
and that's okay. But, how do you determine value on rotated dies? The coin has NOT been cleaned
as the obverse is just a funky streaky toning. Is it a 45 degree clockwise rotation?

You did overpay a bit, and as far as I am concerned, it takes value away from the coin, on this date anyway. At least that was my experience with this one.

I thought $50 was a reasonable price but then with no other bidders I can see that I might have
overpaid. I also thought the streaky toning might turn off a lot as it looked like it was cleaning.
I messaged the seller about the cleaning and he indicated that it was toning. He was correct but
did not post that into the description.
They are cool and I am still pleased!

I hear ya. I was happy to find a nice 86-O that graded 58, but could not get anyone to buy it when I decided not to keep it. The "error" message in big print turned everyone off. A member here mentioned it could not be used in a registry set. I wouldn't know.

Errors can be a thin market. That doesn't seem like an unreasonable price to me.

I am sure I have seen Rotated Die Dollars sell for a premium. They are not common at all. I am also curious how scarce Barber Halves are with a rotated Die. I own a substantial number of Barber Halves and have looked at thousands and have only seen the 1 I own!

Here is my only one...I posted it in an earlier thread and Fred Weinberg was nice enough to attribute it as a 15% CCW rotated die. I sent it in for re-holder and TrueView but chose not to have it specified as a Mint Error so I could have it in my registry set.

Value is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case, the owner. You decided that it was worth whatever you paid for it, just like anything else. The coolness factor takes over. If smoeone says you overpaid, ask them how many they have to sell at that price or less. I can tell you without asking ---they have exactly NONE. You did not overpay because if you go to sell it, another collector will say, "hay that is cool.!!", and will buy it. I paid more money for many a coin just because of the coolness factor and never considered the idea that I may have overpaid. I paid what I wanted to pay. A friend once said "even if you think you overpay for it, at least you have it". This is very true, many coins that a lot of people said I overpaid for, are no longer available at near the prices I overpaid for them years ago.

Unfortunately It is hiding in the SDB and I haven't taken a picture of it yet. I'll try to remember to get a picture of it the next time I pay her a visit!

The value is whatever the market will bear. In my case the premium would be zero since I find rotated dies to be uninteresting. At $50 I suspect you are buried.

...how does one bury himself with $50??? I would assume that only penny's could be used...but you would still probably only get less than halfway buried...unless you are a small child or a dwarf of some sort

1886-O is a good year for rotated dies. The VAM 11 and 11A sequence includes a 45 degree counter-clockwise rotation and clash marks while the die was rotated. Yours is a different die pair (normal date position, 45 degree clockwise rotation), but still interesting. For $50, maybe you overpaid a little, but it's still cool and you like it.

Here's mine. It lives in an MS64 slab from our host. The obverse toning is way more attractive than the photo indicates:
