On a more serious matter, replace "US Mint" with "ACA" and "HOF shipping" with "healthcare."

    They'll come when they come.
Who could have anticipated such success ? Give the Mint a break. Sheesh.
Just imagine the frenzy in the shop. Employees are probably working this weekend to play "catch"-up.
Remember with government delays it's "Job Security".

    Celebrate.

No, I remember 1984 when my order was "lost" after I had a canceled check in my hands with no coins and no prospect of getting any coins. The coin in question was a 1984 Olympic $10 gold piece at $325, which was not a small amount of money in those days. It took a call to a member of senior management for me, plus a certified letter with evidence, for me to get the coins for which I had paid.

There is clear evidence that the 50 cent piece is not a sell out, and probably won't be, yet I'm sitting with an April ship date and no coin. Those of you who want to place more and more of your lives in the hands of the government should take note of this. Government bureaucrats have no incentive to do anything well, except a sense of decency. If they don't have that, they have no incentive whatsoever to do their jobs well because firing them is almost impossible. You could be one of those veterans who has a treatable condition that is on an endless "wait list." For us "the wait list" covers some coins that we can live without. For them it is their lives, which they can't live without.

There was a "glitch" when the 25th Anniversary ASE were sold and if I remeber correctly, the issue was addressed then abd was to be fixed.

    Maybe by Christmas.

They have no incentive to invest in fixing the problem, they have no competition. In an open market, a company with as many problems would long ago have died and been buried. Not so with a government agency that has a monopoly on their product line. As good as it is, is as good as they will ever attempt to be.

When I see statements like government has no incentive to do anything well, Let's have a little perspective. We are dealing with coins here. Not life and death. Personally, I don't care if my coins come now or in 6 months, or never. This is a hobby for me. I can wait. As far as the validity of this statement, well, just look at the interstate highway system the government built. Then look how we landed a man on the moon. This is a democracy. When government fails, you get a chance to vote the bums out. For the life of me, anyone who is anti government by definition is an anarchist, and should consider moving to a commune, where hopefully, he could take all his guns and blow his fellow anarchists away.....lol

I am not an anarchist. I am simply tired of an inefficient government that wastes money, delivers low grade services and refuses to listen to the informed members of the public.

Today, Congress has less and less power over what the government does and how well it does it because the bureaucracy is out of control. The bureaucracy now writes many laws and regulations, and there is little Congress can or will do about them. There few tools to control the bureaucrats because it is almost impossible to fire or discipline them. Even when they are caught red-handed, as the leadership General Services Administration was caught wasting money on hotels, fancy meals and junkets, nothing happens to them. There is outrage for while, and the most everyone forgets about it.

Back in the 19th century a lot of government workers lost their jobs when there was change in the party that controlled the White House. A numismatic example of this is described in the book The Neighborhood Mint, Dahlonega in the Age of Jackson by Sylvia Gailey Head and Elizabeth W. Etheridge. There was an effective director of the Dahlonega mint in place, but after Zachary Taylor was elected president he was replaced by a political hack.

In the 1880s civil service reform began to make some positive headway toward correcting this problem, but now after many years of legislation and "progressive reform" the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction. Now our freedoms and our well being are in the process of being destroyed because of an out of control Federal Government. If you want to call those views the words of "an anarchist" go ahead, but I would suggest that you read some history and perhaps even consult a dictionary for the meaning the word before you apply that label to me and others who are concerned about this issue.

I think this program was badly implemented. 2sides opined that how could they not predict the success of these coins?

Combine baseball with numismatics and it was set to be a grand slam - forgive the misplaced reference.

Back in the 1960's and 1970's I would order proof sets from the US Mint.

One just waited and several months later the goods would arrive.

Back in the '60s, Proof and mint sets were treated as a "service." The prices were very low (only $2.10 per Proof set) and the mint did virtually no marketing to sell them.

Today the mint is in the business of selling coins. They run ads; they promote their products; and the package them to appeal to people with only casual interests in coins. The coins also generate revenue for caused that get the favor of Congress. The coins are sold for prices that are much higher than the cost of producing them. In other words the mint now markets coins like it never did before, and the service should reflect that. With the baseball program the mint has dropped the ball big time.

From previous postings, many of you did not anticipate the rush that would occur with these coins. Demand is a tricky business. If the mint minted too many coins in anticipation of a rush, you guys would be the first ones to criticize the government for being wasteful with our money. Government screws up, you pounce. I don't condone screw ups, but the mint is not Amazon.com and never will be. My only point before, is a screw up at the mint should not be an excuse to government bash. We need government to do the Big Things, that no individual or individual groups would undertake. Most of We the people expect government to fill the void and provide more than Jails, military, and the court system. So how about we just cool it with all the talk, and realize that as much as a slow behemoth that it is, our government does us a lot of good.
Perhaps some of you would like to pick and choose the government services you like and pay for them. Problem is, the other 50% of us might pick different programs. So in the end, in a democracy, we agree to pool resources so that society as a whole benefit. Outraged at the Vet scandal? Lets give all vets a mastercard to go into ANY hospital to get proper service. Oh, by the way, that would be a 1% tax on all of us. I am ok with it. I am willing to pay higher taxes for the common good. If you are not, stop whining about the quality of government service. Without proper funding, the best agencies would be crap. There is a direct correlation between spending and quality of service(usually). IF not, lets get in there and tackle the fraud and inefficiency. But stop your damn whining at the same time you want a tax cut! There I feel better. Happy Memorial Day.

Too bad if that hurts your feelings, it's the truth. I don't care if it's life or death. I never stated that it was. They are making and selling something, that they are the only ones that can make and sell. They don't care if their customers are happy, as long as they get money.

If you've ever called and talked to the mint employees about an order, you'd realize how true that is. They don't care. The people on the phone don't know what's up, they simply make it up on the fly. The fact that they can't build an operational web presence that can deal with high loads. Every private company selling on the web knows how to either build a high availability server farm or to buy they service from someone that can. The mint can't do it, or doesn't know how to do it and there is nothing giving them incentive to do it. Because they have sole rights to their market.

The mint should just get rid of the expected ship dates. It just seems to anger customers. They should just email you when the item has shipped.

And how about NOT putting a shipping dates on the many coins that were intentionally oversold and have zero chance of being shipped at all....they are able to put "backordered",....why not "waiting list"??

I HAVE called and was treated very well.

As to building a high availability server, if they spent the money for that, the Tea Party folks would be screaming that it was a waste of their tax dollars and in this one case, I think they'd be right. The demand was unexpected. Nobody - NOBODY - builds servers to meet demand they cannot imagine happening.

" The demand was unexpected. Nobody - NOBODY - builds servers to meet demand they cannot imagine happening. "

Okay, let's review a few things.

    2011 25th anniversary SAE sets
    2006 20th anniversary SAW sets
    2001 Buffalo commem dollars

And way out of left field would be the recent cluster$%^ related to "affordable care".

That's just a few HIGH demand items where scalable servers should have been in place to accept an unexpected demand.

No company can predict when demand will go through the ceiling, but successful ones prepare for it. That's why they have scalable servers.
You don't need to have all server processors and memory dedicated to the on-line ordering system all the time, you just need to be able to scale up your server when demand rises.

Many companies sell this kind of service for those that don't want to maintain the expertise internally.

The mint has had a lot of time to learn that lesson, the fact is, they haven't. They don't have to.

    That's the problem.

    WRM,

It was the same first day. When you got in apparently it assigned a "cookie" that acted like a passkey that let you go back in and bypass the waiting room. I got back in the second time at around 12:15 PM, however the system was moving so slow by then it took me until 1:05 PM to check out. That seems to be where they stopped shipping the gold proofs and put the gold uncirculated on backorder. My uncirculated gold is still on backorder for 6/30 but who knows when it will ship.

P.S. there was a sort of secret to getting in early if you took the time to read all of the info about the waiting room that appeared on the mint website. I took the time to review all the info on waiting room the day before and saw what would give me the best opportunity to get on fast.

Always be prepared and have a plan and your chances of succeeding will be far greater.imageimage

Let's face it, those angered to the extent I've read on various forums - are generally the flippers.

They missed the best flip in years and are angry.

They come out of the woodwork, then retreat back into the woodwork until the next flip.

I think the USM should go to a VIP list for purchasing first, BEFORE the general public. Before tongue lashing me for that statement, it would be based on the amount of time you were an ACTIVE buyer on the USM mailing list.

Whether you bought one coin or several, strike a date and allow them to enter the site in waves. General public last.

Canadian Mint uses this approach and it works just fine.

I'm not a flipper; I'm a collector. It's my view that most of the flippers got in on the ground floor, especially at the Baltimore coin show, and the collectors, who won't there, got left out in the cold.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I've been on the mailing list for 36 years.

I would think they could at least segregate VIP customers by a couple of segments:

    1) 10 years or more active purchaser
    2) 5 years or more active purchaser
    3) New purchaser

Active purchaser meaning purchased at least one item per year.

We could get into purchasing level, but most would get annoyed thinking the "big boys" are getting the preference. If purchasing level was put into play, each level (1&2) could be split by purchasing level, say $500 or more per year.

Level one gets to buy anytime during Day 1, Level 2 gets in Day 2, then open for Day 3.

This coin is a fluke, chances are very slim we see another commemorative this popular for another 10 years. It would be nice if the mint changed things but they never do, I actually liked the old system best when we all fought to order at the start instead of the waiting room. Only the government could do something like that.

I believe both suggestions would be improvments, but I doubt if either would have extended the gold HOF availability. Bottom line is ALL First Day Sales should be restricted to "1 unit buying limits", let the flippers and marketers gorge themselves from day 2 on. If they announce on-sale dates and times then collectors would have to make themselves available to place their order(s), after that the market is open. Let the collectors collect.

US Mint comments on [product de jour here] shipping delay.

What was that definition of insanity that was so popular recently?
