I bought the card not the grade and it's spectacular Jackie Robinson!

I just wanted to share my latest pickup and wanted to thank Tim Becker (Beck6) for selling me this fantastic looking 1949 Bowman Jackie Robinson. There is a small finger nail indentation in the red background next to his right cheek when you look through a loop. On the back of the card there's some wax residue that to me does not take way from the back of the card. FYI I was the 3rd or 4th person who inquired about the card, with the 2-3 guys in front of me I didn't think I had a chance to purchase the card. I'm glad it fell through a few times.

Great card. Not sure why it's graded so low. All the stuff you listed wrong with it and being slightly off center don't equal a 2.5 in my mind.

Is the rough cut acceptable for this year card or did it contribute to the lower grade?

That is a beautiful piece and a brilliant purchase. I'm sure a card like that costs what a 3.5 or 4 does-- but IMO it's worth every penny, because it looks way better than most of those. Congrats.

Nice card. I am befuddle by the low grade. The seller obviously would have done better to auction that undergraded beauty off, but glad to see you got it.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback. I've looked at this card over and over with the loop and can't find anything wrong with it except the small indent plus the wax residue on the back. I have to be missing something.

Not really.....just a classic case of eye appeal trumping "technical" merits. By far.

Is there any paper loss on the reverse near the top? I see some white areas, and was not sure if yhats the culprit?

Either way, KILLER card....I could see that card in a 7 slab any day of the week.

It doesn't look like paper loss, just a wax or glue residue.

Gorgeous! This makes me wonder...Is a 1949 Bowman card graded with the same stringency as a 1988 Topps or a 1911 tobacco card. what I'm trying to ask is, Are all cards graded the same way across the board regardless of year? If so I may have a problem with that.

  • I just saw this thread. That is indeed a beauty. I have always liked that Jackie card better than his 48 issue. Great pickup and beautiful eye appeal. I am just loving it. Congrats.

Why would that matter if he feels the card is under graded?

I would bet the front of that card in terms of eye appeal has no equal. Might be the best color, focus and clean white borders I have ever seen on that card. Line up all the 9's and they don't look that good.

Just to add....has glue residue or something. Don't waste your time with review. Technically, could have even graded lower. It's all about the eye appeal.

Totally agree; it's all about eye appeal. Now if selling it, I totally understand the dice roll on a higher sticker number-- because there are so many-- too many-- out there who just cling to that VCP grid as if it's a static price guide written by God (these are the people who scream, "I can't pay PSA 4 money for a PSA 2.5!!!).

For what it's worth, I think the card is actually more impressive in the 2.5 holder; it shows you buy the card and not the holder. And even if the number on the sticker is raised, that will not make anyone praise it more than it already has been-- and deservedly so. It's the same great card no matter what the sticker says. The technical guidelines say that such residue knocks it down; but who of us was there at the round table when these arbitrary rules were set in stone? I'd wager that card is not a "2.5" in any savvy collector's mind.

Did you not get your Ruth RC bumped, Matty? And best I can tell you aren't planning on selling it anytime soon. Point being, there's nothing wrong with going for the bump if you feel the card warrants it--even if you aren't selling the card. I do agree that the card speaks for itself and that many experienced collectors who want that card wouldn't think twice about going way above VCP prices for current grade.

I do think it would be helpful to have somebody chime in who's had experience with this card and issue to see why this might have been graded so harshly.

I will give you some background. I purchased this card as part of a large collection. It had no graded cards in it, but some really nice big cards to grade. The collection also had a beautiful Campanella from the same set, with a huge nickel size chunk of paperloss on the back. This leads me to believe at some point these cards were glued into an album of some kind. The Campanella just came back a PSA 2. Color was the same and centering was the same as the Robinson.

I was hoping the residue was wax, but obviously it was not. The card is absolutely gorgeous and in hand, raw, it is as nice as I have seen from that set. Technically I think the grade is accurate and the best it would do is bump to a PSA 3 in my opinion.

Yes, I could have probably sold it via auction or some other means and made a few bucks more, but I gave my word to a few people before it was in hand that I would allow them to buy it and obviously Bobby did so. I went in order right down the line as to who requested a shot and I had a few more people after Bobby that unfortunately did not get that shot. If everyone would have passed I would have sent it to either ebay or an auction house. I really want the card in a PSA 6 or 7 holder and I know my OCD would have been frustrated by the card until I ultimately sold it anyway. I really thought I had nailed it when I subbed the card and I wouldn't even have to sell it, but what are you going to do?

Actually, Dan, the holder on my Ruth had a scratch right across The Babe; I decided to roll the dice since it needed a new holder anyway. Without that scratch I probably would never have gambled. The owner can do whatever he wants with his card; I was merely trying to say the OP's card is gorgeous no matter what the grade.

If someone is not selling, feels a card deserves a higher grade, and for whatever reason needs the third party of a grading company to obtain that validation, then I agree by all means go for it. To each his own, free country, etc., etc. image

Sharp card, Bobby, and unquestionably superior eye appeal for the grade. I am not familiar with this issue, but if people who are believe it has a realistic chance at a higher grade, I would give it a shot, as a bump in grade is a win-win situation for you, as both the collector, if you decide to keep the card in your collection, and the owner, if you decide to sell it down the road.
