Yeah, DCW is completely correct. These fakes started to appear over 30 years ago, some were missed, and some were so bad they fooled nobody (this museum gift shop quality). The coin being discussed is actually a low quality copy ( possibly even a bad copy of a copy). Many in the Exonumia world don’t even track these as they do not fool that many people. The ones in the group pic, those are the beginning of them becoming more “concerning” for the group.

I’m sure his story about getting from his uncle is correct, however I am very familiar with this copy and the others, and if you look at the dozens of this fake coin known, they all have scratches in the same spot, and a very flat rim. It’s not even a question, it would be like seeing all those bad Continental Dollar museum copies that are obvious…this is the same.

The 1960s copies were produced to fool collectors, and many of these “European” copies were actually copies of copies (fakes of fakes, counterfeits of counterfeits, etc. ). That is why their quality is so bad. I consider a modern fake to be made in the last 50 years for coins of this era. But, no matter, this is a very well known fake, in a series of “modern” fakes that are quite researched and obvious to specialists and the grading services. Check out the Civil War Token Society list and explanation of these. Back in 2015-2018 there was a group of collectors and dealers who got these things removed one by one from eBay after they disappeared from Alibaba. At the end, they were selling them from Bulgaria.

Check out this link where they actually use a question mark for the “attribution” of his exact coin because the casting process actually missed some attributes of the real coin. (Which is known in copper and brass). This pairing is one where it does not quite match the authentic so they added a ? For the attribution to call it something….
