What caused this type of toning??

Specifically the bluish/green streak on the reverse.

Looking at the gold hot pressed logo on the back of the NGC slab I'd venture the photo is ever so slightly tweaked and the green isn't as garish as it appears.

With that stated, I don't know what could/would cause that type of toning.

I see the weird color behind the holo, but the slab isn't off colored.


It's a worrisome color. Turned in the holder?

I think the toning is from the alloy mixture not being consistant and causing the streakyness.

Just noticed the cool die cracks. If the reverse and obverse cracks match up it looks like an off center strike too.

Based on past experiments and studying all sorts of tarnish, I would hazard an opinion that that tarnish is a contaminant residue.... Cheers, RickO

This is sorta what I was thinking too, but I have never seen something quite like it. I'm hoping some additional individuals will weigh in with their opinions.

Everyone knows rick hates toning. But I don't think that's what he's getting at here.

I don't like what I see on the coin and I wouldn't be surprised if it were a contaminant like PVC.

An "original" undipped 12-s nickel is often an eye-appeal nightmare. Although this specific pattern of color seems a bit odd, I am not surprised, given the typically negative characteristics of this date. Many 12-s nickels have a bluish or streaky copper appearance. Despite the so-called "problems", this particular example has a superb strike and positive appeal.

If this last pic were presented as an AT? post most would say it is AT because the color is consistent on all elevations. Looks like something spilled on it and I do not like it.

Reminds me of some green stuff I found on a bust half once (lower right wing). Not everyone agreed what it was but I had PCGS conserve it. I believe it was PVC.
