Guilty Pleasures, (Numismatic only, please :)

I've found myself building a 2005 Satin Finish type set in 68 or 69.

And, I don't know why!! It's not like they are rare....or exotic....or in high demand. And they are, technically, outside what one might consider elements of a "type set", since they aren't really circulating coins....

But the dang things just look so GOOD to me! Eye candy, when most modern coinage just makes me think, "pocket change", and makes me say, "eh, whatever".



Anyone else out there with a strange weakness for something that doesn't really fit into your "real" goals? Anything that you are embarassed to tell your coin collecting buddies about?

I have a set of Somalia guitar and motorcycle coins that I asked ICG to slab cause their slabs is the only ones the coins fit into...and they slabbed them

I'm not building a set or anything, but some SBA's look pretty good to me... one's with good DCAM contrast and business strike ones with nice toning.

I get easily sidetracked from type coins by those stinkin' toned silver Washingtons.

Should have finished my 7070 by now, but noooooo.

Set of Presidential Dollar coins in the PCGS signature series in PR69... the picture of the presidents and their signatures on the holders is very cool, not to mention that I actually like the coins themselves... there, I've said it... you happy now? look at what you made me admit

For whatever reason I completed a German 1 Pfenning run from 1950-2001 including all mint marks. I'm missing a few proofs here and there though. Most coins are EF or better. Bought a large collection off Blackhawk maybe....7-9 years ago and that got me started. Never stopped. I still upgrade here and there, even buying duplicates if I like the color/strike.

Valuable? Not at all. Fun and cheap? Certainly! $0.50 for a BU coin to upgrade in your collection? S-C-O-R-E-!

The occasional foreign coin, pre 1960, with either nice luster or great toning. I love U S coins, but the 'dark side' does have a lot to offer.

I used to consider Dan Carr's pieces to be among my guilty pleasures and the below was part of my first order from his website (photo from Dan). I'm a big fan of this piece and used to spend a lot of time admiring the mirrored gate.



I just received another order in the mail today, but things have changed dramatically since the early days and I no longer feel so guilty. I'm solving that by adding other things to the mix

A man from Chicago came in the shop yesterday. He collects from his birth year forward ( in his sixties) . Every coin in circulation since then. He only needed a couple of modern Kennedy halves so it wasn't a difficult order to fill. However, I took out my type set and began to play "Show & Tell". After showing half cents, large cents, all the seated, capped, etc., (Even Walkers and Mercury dimes "ooh'd and ahhh'd " the gentleman…. So, he asked me to find him "one of those albums". The guilty pleasure ? Steering a more astute prominent gentleman toward "classics".


It was almost too easy yesterday. And what a great feeling to meet such an awesome collector with passion and watching his spending (under $20) so it doesn't upset his wife.

Why wouldn't that give me some ? GUILTY pleasure

Although I harbor no feelings of guilt, I do like the occasional exotic coin... could be old, new, darkside etc., just something that catches my eye and I like. Cheers, RickO

Many people would cringe or despise but I'm fascinated with having dates and mint marks "appear" before my very eyes on dateless buffaloes using the magic juice, Nic-a-date!!!
