How would this coin grade? Has pictures now.

Hello All
New to coin collecting and would like some opinions on the grade of this coin, and if it would be of benefit to send to a grading service. The pictures are not of high quality, I'm a rookie with a camera, its a little cheap cannon but I think there is enough information to evaluate. Thanks in advance.
John

    1. Reverse photos?

    2. What is the color of that background the coin is sitting upon? It looks light beige.

    3. Is that a scratch into the eye?

First off welcome to the forums. Secondly You have a very nice semi key date there. I don't think it will straight grade due to the scratch. If it wasent in such a prime focal point you might get away with it. With that said if you don't have much into it it may be a good idea to get it in a slab just to be sure its authentic. Something looks a little off to me but its not a series that Im familiar with.

45, but nasty scratch through the eye. May or may not grade at all.

Hi, welcome to the forum! I think xf but the scratch may preclude a grade. the color looks off but that may just be a white balance issue.

    Welcome! Nice first post!

I think this may not grade with the scratch.

    Welcome!
Tough date coin there. Appears from the color to possibly to have been cleaned and retoned - assuming that pinkish color is what the coin looks like in hand, and not from an adjustment of the tint or hue of the photo. XF45 details, with of course the scratch.

  • Should the color be because of the pic I think the coin would details grade either for damaged or cleaned. But that being said I would get it into a holder because the second pic shows some out line in the date, this could be one of three different RPD (Re Punched Date). Could you please provide a clear close up of the date for a better look? We do have some of the best if not the best IHC specialists on the board.

I don't think its original , ie cleaned and artificially colored

That appears to be "that pink" (is that some of "that green" wedged in there?) - it also looks scrubbed/cleaned a bit. No grade/problem coin from these pics.

Yeah even with the dirt build up remaining from circulation the remainder of the cents surfaces have been boinked.

I thought this picture was a more true representation of the color until I looked at the preview. There is no red in the coin. The coin is more of a chocolate brown.

The brown that you see down by the date is more the true color of the coin.

Thank you all for taking the time to evaluate my coin.

    1. I wasnt concerned with the reverse, it's nice
    2. The background was actually a light mint green. I said it was a cheap camera lol
    3. Yes it is into the eye. but the scratch is so fine that it is almost unnoticeable at first glance.

I was mainly concerned with the scratch, there's really no wear on the feathers and you can see most of the worn diamond with the coin in hand. The photos are pretty bad color wise but they give a pretty good idea of the condition of the coin.

Try taking the pic on a white piece of paper as the true color of the coin is very important to determining many variables. Believe it or not you can get some good pics with a smart phone and you should always post obverse and reverse of a coin as they both determine grade as a whole.

use the manual white balance feature most cameras have to get accurate colors

The best way to determine if it will grade is to send it in. Results of opinion threads here have been mixed when coins were actually submitted. Many time such magnified photographs make things appear worse than 'in hand'. Cheers, RickO

    1. a true grade comes from both sides
    2. That question was to determine if white balance is off. It is.
2b. Since the balance is off the coin color is off
2c. Since the coin color is off, some comments about it being cleaned May or May not apply. Salmon pink on copper is a bad sign for cleaning, but it may just be the photo
    3. It may be big enough to be a problem getting a number instead of a "scratched - xf details" grade. Take a shot of it in hand or further back.

It is a very nice specimen for the date, with the exception of the eye scratch. It would look great in an album. The grade at which a TPG will render a grade is very difficult to predict from pictures. The value of the coin is definitely worth the submission fee.

Here are some pictures with a different camera. One picture brings out every flaw in the coin and a couple that I never noticed before. They are almost invisible to the naked eye.The others are a more true representation of the color. I cant get a close up on the date.

the more I see the scratch on the face, the less chance I think it has of getting a number grade.

is all that black stuff really black, or is any of it green?

    (don't try to remove it)

being semi-key its still got a good bit of value as is because of the semi-key and the otherwise nice details.

Typically cleaned IHC. I don't think anyone tried to really doctor it,
just another attempt to do the imposable act of cleaning copper.
