Copper Collector Rod Burress Passes

In case EAC guys out there have not heard, Rod Burress passed away a couple days ago. I do not know the details but he was one of my first contacts with EAC and early copper.
He will be missed.

    I heard the news this AM from Tom Reynolds and Doug Bird at the Garden State Numismatic Association show in Somerset, NJ this morning. The most reliable information I have is that he passed away in his sleep.

    Rod was a great guy, and ran some of the best (and most affordable) EAC Conventions at the Drawbridge in Fort Mitchell, KY.

    I bought a really cool 1794 C-5a from him at a Baltimore show in 2010 with blundered edge lettering. I will edit the post and put the picture in here when I am on my other computer.

    I bought some large cents from Rod by mail order in the mid-1990's. He seemed like a nice guy.

    He was my first contact with EAC as well, and I have been a member for many years. I also still use a loupe I bought from him.

    Rod was a great guy, and one of these EAC members who was really down to earth and ready to work the less than mega wealthy collectors. He will be greatly missed.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I always enjoyed seeing him at both the PAN show and Baltimore shows.

    He stopped in the shop when he did the PAN shows.

    He will be missed.

    Rod at one time represented me in EAC auctions. Nice guy. I bought the last bottle on the face of the earth of Blue Ribbon from him. He always had
    those fabric nicely stiched coin holders. Soft spoken and honest fellow he was a good man.

    What a bummer. He seemed to be a very fine gentleman. I met him at a EAC convention in VA years ago and had email contact with him a few times over the years. It seemed like he was very involved with EAC.

    Very sad news.

    When I first joined EAC back in Junior High, I immediately joined his mailing list and always looked forward to his typed price lists. Great memories of pouring over those price lists for hours.

    lol that is right. i did speak to him on the phone a few times. forgot all about it. cut and dry, very effective and very knowledgeable for sure.

    Sorry to hear this news. Just saw Rod at the PAN show last weekend. He was always pleasant and most certainly knew his stuff. My condolences to his family and friends.

    New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    I just edited my original post to show one of the coins I got from Rod. It resembles the kind of stuff he sold. Solid quality without breaking the bank, and a no-nonsense business approach.

    Knew who he was, heard good things about him, but never dealt with him. Sad news when the hobby loses one of the good guys.

    Great copper guy, never heard one negative about him, dealt with him long ago but lost touch as he didn't frequent my area. RIP

    This is such sad news and a surprise. He was one of my "go to" guys at Baltimore and a few other shows. He always set up with Jimmy Long. He was a very, very nice and honest man. I will miss him much. I always tried to buy something from him every time I saw him. Very good quality and he would always tell you what he thought of the coin, including the negatives.

    I have been unable to locate his obit. If anyone has it, perhaps they can post it. It seems to have been taken down. He died on May 11, 2014 at age 70. Too young.
