BBCE Listing-What am I Missing?

They have a 1971-72 basketball wax box(12 count) for $12,000. They grade the packs nm to mint, so essentially $1,000 per pack. On the other hand they list PSA 7 packs for $650 and PSA 9 packs for $800. So 12 NM packs comes to $7,800 and 12 Mint packs comes to $9,600. What am I missing here?

Lately in this unopened market there has been a premium place on full unopened boxes. It is not unusual to see the cost of the box be greater than the sum of the packs if that makes sense. The same seems to go for a full sealed case vs. the equivalent number of unopened boxes.

  • Just buy 12 PSA packs and an empty box, bust them out of the holder, place in box, get BBCE to authenticate and seal. PROFIT

It would take some serious work to even find 12 graded packs to pick up. Not sure if the pack backs differ, but if they do, I would anticipate Steve wanting to see proper pack back distribution, which could further complicate matters. A 24 pack box sold last year for $24K - the same $1K per pack that Steve is asking.

and you're forgetting the rarity factor. Not many complete boxes out there--less than 10??.

It would look great with my 70/71 box--but can't pull the trigger on the '71

The 1970-71 box you have is incredible. The only other one I recall seeing was with Dave & Adam, around the time I started collecting again. Sky's the limit on that one.

You're trying to bring rational thought into an irrational market.

thank you all! Interesting story on how I ended up with the box. Have always wanted one--not my favorite year or set, but they are very rare as was said, and how many times do you get to own one? I got this 2 years ago from Steve. Just prior there was one for auction with Heritage. Was not BBCE sealed and there was a disclaimer that Heritage usually puts in with unopened--ie: "cannot guarantee a 3rd party will authenticate". I won the box and when I got it was a little disturbed at the condition of the packs. I sent it to Steve to authenticate and lo and behold--every pack was NG. I was out BIG BUCKS--and was not sure Heritage would make good based upon their statement in the ad.

Sent the box back to Heritage and sent a letter explaining that Steve said the box was NG. I knew that I had to get around the disclaimer--so I checked all the other ads for unopened. Not all of them had the disclaimer. So I made the assumption that they knew it was bad and were just trying to cover their tails--otherwise why didn't all the unopened have the disclaimer?? Long sort short--Heritage did make good and refunded all my $$.

a week later this box showed up on the BBCE website. I snapped it up immediately--sold some stuff to finance the purchase--and voila!

Could have been burned big time--but it all worked out

Great story Manny! Do you own a lot of 70s basketball wax? Despite the prices for the 70-71 and the 71-72 boxes we've covered, I feel like there's still some deals to be had in 70s basketball wax. I bought a beautiful box of 72-73 (Dr J rookie) a while back and it's one of my favorites.
