Many of you may remember "Ozzie" i.e. -- Vernon Oswald, a dealer who died a few years ago. His daughter Linda has been a dealer in her own right for many years and still uses the name "Ozzies coin shop." She does quite a few coin major coin shows and some of you proll'y know her and have dealt with her.
Own of my other hobbies is restoring old tube radios. How many females do you think restore old radios, by themselves, with no husband or boyfriend help? My guess is just about 0.
Seriously though, anyone have any ideas why there are so few women in numismatics? Women do collect other things like dolls. There seems to be a pretty fair number of females that buy/sell/collect antiques which may be the closest collectible compared to coins.
It doesn't seem like men are chasing them away or ignoring them at shows. Their money is just as good as any man's money.

I think there are plenty of women in numismatics. There just aren't many on Internet forums, most likely because of the idiotic comments from too many men.
While gathering information for Florida United Numismatists Social Media websites I have had the opportunity to interview some of the women who work within our numismatic hobby. This thread was of interest to me as I try to seek out and speak with female numismatists attending the F.U.N convention. I feel that by sharing their perspective of the hobby it will encourage other young women to become involved in numismatics as well. After all, young collectors are the future of the hobby.

I know several very good women numismatists both inside and outside of Heritage. While there are clearly far more men, it seems to me that the proportion of women is, if anything, increasing.

Some of the women named in this thread are not legitimate numismatists or even collectors. You would be surprised how many people who are active in coin clubs don't even collect coins.
Working for a numismatic company in sales does automatically translate into numismatic credentials and working for a numismatic company as an accountant definitely doesn't. Being married to a coin dealer doesn't by default make a person a numismatist either.

While I did know that there were women in various high places in numismatics I did learn of even more than I was aware of.
I have been thinking of the reasons why and some of it is probably because men controlled most of the money in the household not too many years ago. I still don't see why it hasn't changed quicker though. It does seem like there is a pretty fair amount of females involved in both sides of antiques.
I was glad to see that swhuck said that he thinks that the number is increasing which I think also. Just think of all the new members there would be if the ratio improved to even 25%!

The female YN population is slowly growing. I believe as more female coin collectors are encouraged by their parents and they see that it is ok for them to learn about and enjoy numismatics as much as boys, the numbers will grow more quickly. One of the things I am trying to do as WIN President is to seek out female YN's through local and national coin clubs and through the Girl Scout program to let them know there is an organization where they can feel comfortable and have support and comraderie in their numismatic interests. Young women numismatists seem to not get nearly as much focus as their male counterpart YN's, and I would like to see that become more equal.

this is about the same thing that i read/heard said about female chess grandmasters and why there aren't more. simple answer is acceptance and exposure. .
