Here's my entry, an 1845-D half eagle which appeared in Stack's portion of Auction '84. It was part of the complete collection of Dahlonega gold that was sold in the sale, formerly owned by Arthur Montgomery, President of the Coca-Cola Company. The images are courtesy of BluCC Photos.

Unless that coin has some rub I am missing making it an AU58 that was market graded up to an MS61, I'd say that is an easy MS63 and possibly 64.

You can't grade from photos shot under florescent as this light source is very forgiving and is the reason why clothing retailers use it in their fitting rooms.

The reverse has a clash mark above the F in FIVE, that appears to be caused by the hair above Liberty's forehead and the front of the coronet.

I know that grading is subjective and thus open to interpretation. I purchased this piece over ten years ago from Forum member Dahlonega, who acquired it (uncertified) in the Auction '84 sale. I believe that it received the PCGS MS61 grade around 1998. Shortly after I purchased the coin circa 2003, I had PCGS add the Montgomery provenance to the cert label. I can't remember if it was a regrade or a reholder, but it was submitted in the MS61 holder. PCGS may have required a regrade in order to add the provenance. In any case, it hasn't been graded for at least 11 years, or possibly as long as 16 years.

I don't play the "upgrade game," so I'm just happy to own this piece. It was part of a set that a well-known Atlanta firm put together for the President of the Coca Cola Company in the 1970s and early 1980s, who directed them to assemble the finest set obtainable. Mr. Montgomery wanted the finest set of Dahlonega gold to reside in Georgia. Today the Arthur Montgomery Collection (in Auction '84) is still considered to be a landmark sale by Dahlonega specialists.

I bought this 1806 half eagle in the "Auction '82" sale from Superior. They graded it AU-55. Today it is a PCGS AU-58 holder.



It is hard to believe that was almost 32 years ago. We really date ourselves when we own up to being the original buyers.
